p.1 #1 · Anyone Using Live view on D300?

Hi to all, I just want to ask if you prefer using live view mode during a shootout?

I never use live view unless I am shooting macro shots. The AF takes to long and the mirror dropping, raising, dropping, then finally raising again takes forever.

Ohhh k, I have friends who are professional wedding Photographers, and I'm inspired by their work and all of their works were amazing. One thing I'm surprised with them, is that they shoot using live view with their Canon DSLR cameras. From the start to the end of the wedding or event day. They all shoot using Live view!

I think it's because you can see clearly the sharpness of the image rather than sticking your one eye to the camera. I wanna try using live view shooting events.

How bout you guys? do you know some one using live view from a Nikon cam during the wedding day?

Andre Labonte, I think most of the photographers here are uncomfortable to use live view, but I still gonna give it a try

Oh, by all means, you should. I can see the attraction to it. I just found that my framing was better the traditional way. But that's me. I tend to move when framing with live view and never get what I want. I'm much more steady doing it traditionally.

I think you are right, most of us here are comfortable with what we have done for years.

Once you test it out, tell us what you think.

Yah, as early as now, I'm gonna get used to shooting with live view. Since I'm kinda new and experimenting things bout photography.

I've seen Great Photographers using live view all the way "Using Canon". Then Why not give a try "On Nikon"

I have used live view a few times to check WB. With Live View on, you can scroll thru all the WB options, and see instant results, but I’ve only done that a couple of times. Other than that, Live view is a worthless klunky feature I won’t use. Besides that, it’s too hard to see what one is doing in the daylight with Live View.

That WB feature sounds interesting. Might be good for initial set-up. I'll have to try it.

I tryed it when I got the camera, you have to try it before you can judge it. Now I know .... it's not my thing. Slow and made me remember my old compact camera.

I know this isn't the answer you are expecting.. but I use my liveview on the D700 when trying to shoot something from a difficult angle where I can't get to the viewfinder... ie: holding the camera above my head to get a shot. This isn't very often, but it is certainly useful to have.

I constantly use Live View. Its like a view camera in minature.

For landsacpe work combined with contrast based focus you can really dial in your picture. Zoom in after focusing and you can check near and far focus ("hyperfocal distance" and "depth of field") I find it totally invaluable.

Oh...and wb for tricky shots is easy that way too.

Oh ya, I also use Liveview on my D90 from time to time.... so in general, yes - I like Liveview, even though I thought I would have no use for it at all.

Thanks guys from your comments about live view.

BTW, I use Manual Focus only with prime lenses, Because The AF in live view is just too slow for Nikon.

@ lxdesign, Have you tried using live view to cover an event or something that is fast moving subjects like Wedding Event? How do you deal with that?

I would think you would lose stability if shooting offhand at a wedding. I've meant to play with live view on a tripod for macro but haven't gotten around to it.

Yah, That's what amazes me with the wedding photographers that I know Using Live view all the Way,with their bare hands and no tripods. Stability would be the point here

Honestly, I just cant believe that a professional wedding photographer would use live view for an entire wedding. Even on Canon, the autofocus is not nearly as fast as the normal AF system, and at least with Nikon, the extra delay when taking the shot is not worth it. What's the point? Even with manual focus lenses, you're not going to be as fast with live view as through the viewfinder. Unless of course, you're talking about a 'professional' that is only equipped with a point and shoot camera, and has no choice.

I find live view invaluable for the very few times I need it- checking white balance, critical focus for a macro shot, or shooting long focal lengths or landscapes from a tripod. For fast moving subjects or most other day to day shooting, it really has no place.

No... I wouldn't use live view for something like shooting a wedding. I shot a wedding two weekends ago ... and never used liveview. I use liveview for things like getting shots off the floor where I don't want to physically get down on the floor to see into the view finder, or where I have to hold the camera over a tall fence. Stuff like that. I have also used it for framing on a tripod in situations where I was into a tight corner. Those are the applications where live view works well for me.
