The difference between 10 and 12 Mp is negligable for most uses; don't stress over the idea of going "backwards" in resolution if you shoot sRAW1. The high-ISO advantage alone is worth a lot; I never shot the 5D at 3200 ISO, but the 5D2/sRAW1 at that ISO is great.

There are other features of the 5D2 that made the upgrade essential for me, two of the biggest being micro-focus adjust and the rear LCD. There's also Live View, in-camera flash control, dedicated AF-On button, and a smoother, more solid feel about the 5D2.

And of course, the resolution is there when you need it. I always shoot full RAW for commercial work, stock photography and personal projects.

The 5D is a great camera and you could happily use it to shoot weddings for years if it is meeting your needs. But the 5D2 offers even more, including a usable 10Mp RAW capture that effectively makes it two cameras in one.

and don't forget that 10MP scaled from 21MP gives more detail than natively shot 10MP and a bit cleaner signal to start with also provides more detail so the 12.7MP vs 10.1 MP difference should be noticeably less than expected too.... although i've never compared since i have never used the original 5D.

the high iso difference will be more noticeable

MFA can help with low DOF wedding shooting

you can review shots in the field for motion blur/focus

etc.

I'm supposing you have a source for a new 5D1 body. However, the 5D2 body has enough improvements to make it the more desirable maintenance replacement for a wedding professional, even if a new 5D1 body is available.

For a professional, replacing a 5D1 with a 5D2 is not an "upgrade," it's a maintenance replacement. Getting a 1Ds would be an "upgrade."

Replacing your tires, or your shutter is a maintenance replacement. Upgrading to a newer/improved body/lens is an upgrade.

You're looking at it from a hobbyist point of view rather than a business point of view.

If I'm in the taxi business and my old 1999 Impala is due for replacement, I don't try to find another 1999 model--I buy a current 2009 Impala. That is only a maintenance replacement, even though the 2009 Impala has more advanced features than the 1999 Impala.

If, instead of a 2009 Impala I buy a 2009 Lexus, that is an upgrade.

You make a valid point, but it still depends on your business use. If you can suddently take pictures in lower light and shoot video benefiting your business, then it's an upgrade.

Yes, I've been testing it out and it's only the 5DII that does this, even the 1Ds3 full size RAW file doesn't contain a full-size jpeg, could be very useful and I see what big country is on about, if you can get the file right in-camera you have a 21 meg jpeg at your disposal AND the ability to correct a smaller RAW file if need be. the sRAW files seem about 10 meg smaller on average too. Clever.

Apart from it's focusing system I'm liking the 5DII more and more

50D has it too

but keep in mind they are HEAVILY compressed and don't get full processing either, full-size jpgs so expect noticeable jpg artifacts
