p.1 #1 · How slow is the 5D classic?

I recently sold my 30D and am planning to buy a used 5D classic. I mostly shoot people, flowers, landscape etc. No sports, birds or wildlife.
What I'm wondering is just how slow is the 5D classic? Will I be running into a full buffer a lot? Autofocus speed?
My 30D was fast enough for me.
I would really like a 1DsMKII but it's a little too expensive.

if you liked the 30d you will love the 5d, but the 30d gave 5 fps...if that is important then get a 50d and a great lens, or just get a great lens instead of a new camera - the 30d still delivers imho

I bought my 5d used almost 6 months ago after moving up from the XTI. and I'm never looking back. I love the camera, focus and buffer are great. I shoot portrait work and landscapes.

DLNB, for your type of photography I don't think you should have any problem with the buffer. If you didn't find yourself running into buffer issues with the 30D you won't like find that problem with the 5d.

But seriously, it is not slow in any of the ways you've mentioned and I can't imagine you will be disappointed. Frame rate is the only 'limitation' and that isn't likely to be a factor for you.

The 5D isn't slow compared to the 30D in any way except for frames per second, and it sounds like that won't matter for your use. In just about every other way it's better.

For the type of work you're talking about, I doubt you will run into any problems with the 5D. I shoot a lot of sports and often used the 5D as a second body, next to a 1D3 or 1D2N. The cameras obviously have different speed characteristics, but I never had any problem using the 5D. Never filled up the buffer or was disappointed with the AF, just took some time to get used to.

Only gripe is a little shutter lag with the 5D (time from pressing the button to the shutter actually opening). But again, for everyday stuff this is fine and I don't even notice it since I've been using my 5D so much lately. It sounds like the 5D would suit you very well!

5d is not slow. it is sweet and it will blow the socks off your 30D right away. I have a 5D and 1ds2 and the 1ds2 only beats the 5D on autofocus in low light. 5D is a hell of a machine.

For action shots (my 3 & 2 y.o.), I've never noticed an issue with the buffer. If I miss a shot, it's usually because I'm trying to focus with one of the peripheral AF points, or else trying to do a focus and recompose with the center point. Kids are too kinetic for that usually.

This is the kind of thing I've read and the reason I posted the question.
On my 30D I never used the high speed mode. As long as the camera is reasonably fast (similar to the 30D frame rates aside) I'll be very happy with it.

I think people are getting slow mixed up with FPS. yes the 5d is 3 fps and the 30D is 5 fps (or 3 if you choose.
I think what the OP was meaning (sorry if I'm wrong) was there used to be reports that the 5D was much slower in use.
But going by the specs on TDP
The 5D shutter lag is 75ms with a VF blackout of 145ms
which compares to the 30D of 65ms and 110ms
Yes the 1 series is faster but then you'ed hope so for the extra cost

As for the buffer the 5d is bigger than OP's 30D at there respective top FPS so with the 30D chopped down to 3 fps I would think it would be about the same (the 5D manages 60jpeg or 17 Raw)

Before my 30D I used a 300D. I just wanted to make sure it's not 300D kinda slow. With that camera I would often have to wait for the buffer to clear if I shot RAW, Never a problem with my 30D and it looks like it wont be a problem with the 5D.

You will find the 5D to be pretty good, although if sports or fast-moving objects are your subject then you may want to find a used 1D2 (>$1000) or a used 1D (>$500) since those are easily affordable and are pretty much the best bodies for fast AF (the 5D isn't even in the same class for AF as the 1D types)

The 5D is plenty fast. The AF is fast, and accurate. Sure, it's not a 1dmk3, but it's going to do a lot better than the 30D.

I OWNED a 30D, I OWN a 5D.

Mine had to take a few remedial classes. There was talk about holding it back a grade, but it buckled down and graduated with its class.

Seriously, though, AF is going to be roughly the same. You're losing a couple of frames per second. Work on your timing.

Indoors, my 1DMKIIn hunts and has difficulty getting focus, especially if there is little contrast. Under the same situations, my 5D snaps into focus. A friend of mine has the same experience with his 1DMKII. Outdoors, the situation is totally reversed.

FPS aside... How responsive is the interface compared say to a 400D/XTi? And would the buffer clear faster or slower?

Both these cameras use DIGIC II processing but as a more professional model would the 5D be clocked faster?

I have two 5Ds and a 50D. I find the 50D better for wildlife photography both in terms of focus speed and fps. But the 5D exceeds the 50D in image quality. For both cameras, good "L" glass is really beneficial. When I graduated to a 500/4 my keeper rate went way up.

The 30D and 5D are very similar in terms of menu and speed at which they do things. They are both based off the Digic II processor, so if you are happy with the speed of your 30D, the 5D will be fine for you. I moved from a 20D to a 5D and am very happy with it, an excellent camera.
