p.1 #1 · Vintage MX W/200L

I shot a Vintage motocross event here in the NW and tested out a new 200L on my old reliable Mark IIn.

Here are a few shots that were popular and posted at a local racing site.

Had lots of sun mixed with moving cloud cover all day but tons of light, and in an end result shot all over the board (hand held) with various ISO & SS's testing the lens and DOF in various combinations. I bought this lens to shoot mainly for indoor sports, but I'm now thinking for these type of events, when positioning on the track is possible, this combo will be my preferred over the 70-200 2.8L. Focal length on a 1.3 is perfect IMO, but with larger crowds like the AMA, may be a bit long.......

Here a few shots from a 5D with a 200L and a 1.4x extender. I like this combination better than the 70-200. (my 70-200 is the f/4 IS not the f/2.8). I think primes are much sharper than zooms and my 1.4 is close to your 1.3 crop. I too like this focal length for bikes, and your MkIIn seems to have much more "pop" than my 5D, but I think that may be more you than my 5D.
Two of them are Av, 500 ISO, f/5, and the other is Tv at 320ss, ISO 250, f/9. Shots are from Road Atlanta.

Wow... fantastic shots! Incredibly sharp with vibrant colors. The action just jumps off the screen at me.

These bring back memories as I used to race MX back in the late 70's and early 80's.

Jefferson, hey nice shots. Thanks for taking the time to reply. I own a 1.4x extender and plan to use it with the 200L at a couple events coming up this month. Have you noticed a difference in quality with and without the extender on your 5D?. Your examples, look to be on!.

John, thank you. I appreciate your feedback. Nice to see there are some shooters out there that have these older bikes in their blood. I have shot at the AMA level and it was nice to see people tearing it up on these older rides. Great racing as well. These guys take this very serious and after being there just a few minutes, I was pleased with the challenge to capture some action, with emotion (Eyes). Thanks again for taking the time to reply.

Gotta love those Maicos. They all look good but #1 & #3 do it for me; nice composition.

I agree! Those old Maicos are sweet. I hated when they changed the name to M-Star. I almost bought a Maico back in the day. I ended up owning a few Husqvarnas instead. The Husky's were better for general offroad use. Even the older Yamahas are in fantastic shape. It's nice seeing the old bikes looking just like they did in their day. Even the front section of the pipes look surprisingly good on these old bikes.

Bob, Thank you!. I moved around a ton, always paying attention to the sun and positioning on the track. I thought that shot was a great exposure....

Crisp colors! Excellent captures. It brings me back to 1981 when I raced CR125R.
Curiously, which 200L? There are 3 kinds with the coveted red stripe.

Best,
Vic

Vic, thank you. These posted were with the 200 2.0L, but I shoot a 70-200 2.8L at these kind of events as well.

Thanks again for the post, I appreciate it...........
