13 bobs at todays 80 person wedding. 13 with SLR's. D700, 5D's, 40D's, L glass, boda bags, and topped off with one who rocked a fong. 13 who all watched to see what the pro was gonna pull out when it was game time. My equipment was best, cost the most and I had the most red stripes on my lenses. This needs to be everyone's testimony. Bob is watching. Bob also has a big mouth and will talk about your low grade gear.

To the folks on the forum who shoot weddings with Rebels and D40's, your gonna raise a lot of eyebrows. The pro-sumers are out in full effect. Can you shoot a wedding with the said cameras? Sure? Can you shoot a wedding WELL with these cameras? I'd say yes. Will it hurt your reputation as a pro photographer to be out done in way of equipment by a guest a wedding? I'd say yes.

Buy the best. Bob is coming.

13 is unlucky... I guess it's time I upgrade this little XSi to like the 1Ds3 or something... Thanks for the warning!

my biggest competition friday night was the girlfriend of the brother of the bride. she looked about 13 (though was probably closer to 21) and rocked a rebel over my shoulder all night. she was all sprawled out on her belly in the aisle during the ceremony - and the whole place could see her undies.

not a pretty sight.

Someone rocked a 50D at my last and was trying to get in front of my wife. It's like he thought that I was shooting solo... until I went to talk to my wife about something and he saw us together... he was mindful of her after that.

I have not seen any Bob's with a Think Tank "batman utility" belt yet! That's how they know I'm a pro!

Crazy... Sam I think it's the area you work in. Bay area tends to have a bit too many gearheads. Haven't seen any guests sporting primes (other than me bringing a nifty fifty to a friend's) or L's yet?

^ yeah

I see nice bodies all the times, but rarely a prime. The one time a guest had a 50/1.8 - we ended up chatting many times during the evening.

It should also reaffirm your necessity to get paid upfront for everything. I don't care if there would be 15 bobs, as long as I am paid. If bob is in every pic, thats not fault. I really wish brides would tell people not to bring those kind of cameras.

That would make me want to use even cheaper gear just to spite. Look at some of those gear exclusive forums, dude's are taking 5000 pictures of their cat walking away from them and pixel peeping it for ISO noise with those cameras.

It's about what it looks like on paper.

I could care less what who shows up with. Results are what matters. I don't make business purchase decisions based on what some guest may or may not show up with. If you're that paranoid about the guests' cameras, put gaffer tape over all insignia and brand information on your bodies so they can't tell what the hell you're shooting. For all they'll know you're field testing the next big secret.

13 sounds average to low - or high - depending on the demographic.

Though a short while ago I shot a wedding where one of the guests was the most commercially successful photographer I know. He left his rig at home.

One thing that makes the 'bobs' chuckle is to toss a few lenses across the field.

As a resident in the West of Scotland where most of my weddings are shot I do not have this problem Sammy.

Most just get drunk and asked me why I'm pointing the flash behind me.

+ I think its your pix that make you stand out chum, not the expensive red lines on your lenses.

Cheers
B
