Over at Canon land 135mm f2L is arguably the sharpest one. How about for Nikon? For telephoto do you use zoom or prime lens?

the 135f/2 is preety sweet but old lens and way overpriced, the 105 macro is great but only 2.8 for a limited purpose, the 85 1/4 is sick on a crop but hating how short it is on full frame. the 70-200 is preety great but people have mixed feelings, i just picked up one up finally after switching to fx and am very happy with the results, although nothing is as sharp as my 24-70, they need to nano some primes and update some of their older lenses... i prefer flexibility of zooms now adays but kept all my primes for those days where i really want to concentrate.

"Arguably" the absolute sharpest lenses in either Canon or Nikon are the 200/2, 300/2.8 and 400/2.8, but they're all a bit crap if you need a 28mm.

Only crap part is that photozone only have crop body tests (starting to get FF results for Canon meh).

Both my 3002/.8 VR and 500/4 VR are tack sharp and full of detail!

Sure, having come from the Canon camp, the 135L is a superb lens, razor sharp with lovely bokeh, but then again, all of the big white primes are superb as well. Horses for courses.

I am very very impresses with the sharpness and detail of all the Nikon kit I own, see sig.

200 f/2, no contest. For over 200, the 400 2.8 is extremely sharp.

I disagree about the 85mm 1.4 being too short on FF. I feel just the opposite, which is that I think it's too long on a crop body and just right on full frame.

I think the 85 is perfect on either FX or DX. But that might have to do with the fact that I do like both 85mm (or so) and 135mm (or so) in both formats!

I use the 80-200 or 70-200 VR, the 300 f/4, and the 600 f/4 for telephotos. I might throw in the 1.7X TC as well to get a little more reach.

Other than the 600, the others are chosen based on being the best zoom or prime in the range for a price I was willing to pay. I'd prefer the 300 f/2.8 VR, but at $5100 new it is going to have to wait. Same for the 200 f/2 VR and 400 f/2.8 VR. Maybe someday, but I'm pretty well set for now. I've yet to use the 85, 105 DC or 135 DC, so I can't comment on those. I will say that Nikon's top zooms are awesome.

p.1 #18 · What is the sharpest lens? Zoom or prime for telephoto?

I shot canon for the past 14-yrs. and now having shot Nikon for about a year now.
I had all of canon's L lens and some, IMO the 200 1.8 was the sharpest lens they have ever made. The 135L lens was sharp, but not even in the same league when compared to the 200 1.8 lens. I liked the 200 over the 300 2.8 IS and the 400 2.8 IS lens. On Nikon side, the 400 2.8VR is every bit as sharp as the infamous 200 1.8 lens. I must say that I am a bit disappointed in my 200 f/2 as its not even close to the 200 1.8 canon. I know some may think I'm crazy or may have a bad copy of the lens, so I plan on sending it to NPS when I get back from shooting the Jr. Olympics Volleyball tournament in Miami later next month. I've got so many other events booked between now and mid july. Both the 24-70 & 70-200 (Nikon) are sharper than Canon's versions, hands down.
