I just receieved an email from the Swedish distributer AIFO saying that they have just received their first Quadra which will be their demo.

I am looking forward to hearing reports about it but am also dreading the thought that someone will write something that changes the Quadra from being interesting to a MUST HAVE NOW

See told you

Not at this stage. I nearly did order one, but just cannot see any advantage over my Ranger outfit except portability - so I bought a wheeled Pelican case to make things easier on myself, and see how that goes first.

Frank Doorhof says he's receiving his unit from the Dutch distributor tomorrow. He'll be posting a review on his weblog.

Ouch, July. Oh well, at least money will stay in my bank account for a little longer.

The Swiss distributor (profot.ch) will receive the first Quadras today from Elinca, so mine should arrive by mid next week.

My zeal to have a Quadra was waning due to the long wait. Well, it's back!

Mine's not. That's not a review by any stretch of the imagination, that's amateur advertising copy. And... as Paul already mentioned, the size and weight advantage diminishes greatly once you start putting up stands and modifiers, backgrounds, etc. If I never needed more than 400Ws then it would be a no brainer. As it is... I will wait.

Somebody said that you can use this thing while the battery is being charged. Is that true? I wonder how it affects speed etc...

I wonder if other people are getting them too.....

FYI,

Bogen Imaging, in the US, is the dealer supplying the Quadra domestically. In metro Washington, DC my Bogen rep replied the Quadra is to be released mid June....Take on a few weeks and I might see one late July. We're shooting a widlfire story in the mid west and want to use these for our off camera light source. We'll see.

A more in-depth review:

The functionality seems very similar to the new BXri.

Very interesting detail for some of us doing more video work these days.........

"Although it's not at first obvious, as there's no tungsten bulb, Elinchrom also managed to incorporate a modeling light using an LED chip. This continuous light source is daylight balanced (unlike a tungsten bulb) and surprisingly bright. It generates little heat and opens up the possibility of using its cast of light for movie clips with the latest cameras from Canon, Nikon and Panasonic.........................
.....Elinchrom has, fortunately, also developed an adapter so that all Elinchrom light-shapers, like the Rotalux softboxes and reflectors, can be used."

Do I see a full bank LED head with Elinchrom modifier mount in the future?
I might be getting a little ahead of myself here, but you can bet I'll be checking into whether this unit will drive a couple 1X1 LitePanels in the meantime.

Very cool.

Damn, just when I thought I was about done with packs and heads, this guy comes along. I'm intrigued by the LED light. I just wish the 5D II allowed for more robust control over the video settings. I'd be all over both of these if that were the case.

However, this may be right up my alley with my mini light setups. a D40 is a nice CCD camera, and I've been shooting it at 1/4000th easily with speedlites.

A Quadra, mini lightstand, medium softbox, D40, 17-55, and 70-200, could all pretty much fit in and on a backpack, and easily match ambient in full sun.

Now if only I could fit an Octa in that backpack.......

I regret reading this thread! Oh and I totally glazed over the built in Skyport. Geez. What more could they stuff into this little pack? Does it make perfectly scrambled eggs? Toast? Perhaps it also serves as a french press.

I wonder when they will do a Ranger RX update with a built in Skyport?

In any case....I will definitely get this as soon as it comes out. Portability is key for me and this fits the bill.
