hello

i am hoping that some have experience with the kiron-nikon mount. I am planning to buy one, but would like to know how it perfoms.

Had the K mount version. Very good lens, but lacking in contrast wide open. Performance picks up a lot by f2.8

Pretty good lens. We have test results from it in the Kiron Klub files. There's also a Kiron 24mm f/2 version.

I have the Vivitar 28/2 Close-Focus in K-mount as well. Seen at this page (scroll down a bit).
I don't know if this one is made by Kiron? Edit: Ok, so mine is a Komine made lens (28xxxxxx serial) with 49mm filter thread. All of what I've written below applies to that lens only... Kiron has a 22xxxxxx serial number and 55mm filter thread.
Interesting thread about the difference between the two: http://forum.manualfocus.org/viewtopic.php?pid=104897

My experience with the Komine version on crop (40D) is the following:

- has glow wide-open, need to stop down to improve sharpness;
- bokeh can be really wild wide-open with busy backgrounds;
- quite easily shows polygonal highlights when you stop down a little;
- some barrel distortion (will be noticeable when shooting architecture);
- sometimes shows blue fringing in subjects like trees against white clouds;

- sharpness is good for landscapes but also for close focus when stopped down a bit;
- bokeh can be very nice when used properly;
- build quality is good (smooth focus ring, nice aperture ring, all metal).

When used for close focus the rendering can be quite sharp and contrasty. I like the lens but don't use it very much because often the bokeh situation isn't suitable. I got one for around 35 euros iirc.

I've been looking into these lenses myself, and I found that thread listed earlier. Then I started looking for samples from the Komine and found this:

That image has definitely seen some PP (sharpening, maybe contrast/clarity). Nice example though.

I have the kiron made version and it performs like crazy on close to mid-range. Infinity is still a problem though, seems that mine needs some adjustment (because it has floating elements). Very promising though, and I sometimes prefer it to my beloved Olympus 28/3.5

If I could find a cheap one of those in nikon mount, I would be all over it!

ahamb, nice listing, its the kiron version, serial starts with 22 and 55mm filter.
It seems it have some rather minor flaws, but nothing to worry about. As i was told in another tread, the aperture blades seems to be the biggest problem with the lens (oil).

From what u guys been writing this is a go for me, im actually getting very excited to try it out. I should be receveing it next week

txh for helping.

ulrikft: if i dont like it ill sell it to u, but the chances are small

Ulrik: Keep in mind that the example above was shot at (close to) minimum focus distance.

@biotar: Can you rule out the thickness of the adapter you're using?

I'd like to try (have ) the 28/2 Nikkor though. I'm sure it's a class above the Vivitar/Kiron.

I would think that's a significant part of the whole point to the Komine "Close Focus" version.

Hehe, AhamB: I know who shot the shot and he has written a bit about how it performs :P Close performance is why i love these kind of lenses got a 20 1.8 (sigma) that focuses real close, and a 35 1.4 (nikon, ai-s) that focuses reasonable close, a 28 2.0 would go nice inbetween those.

Fortunately yes, its simply too slim for this lens because it focuses too much past infinity...

@Ulrik: There's a Kiron 28/2 in Nikon mount at ebay now , ending within 15 hours. Price is still good (but it's in the US).

Should be better, yes, but it's more highly priced. The 2.0 is very affordable.
