I was just looking at the image comparison at http://www.the-digital-picture.com/Reviews/Canon-EF-200mm-f-2-L-IS-USM-Lens-Review.aspx and there doesn't seem to be much of a difference between f2 and f8. I mean obviously, there's a difference, but f2 - f8 provides brilliant background blur, ya know? Which do you prefer, like super background blur, or super duper background blur? I'm just wondering how you guys determine what aperture to use? If I owned this lens I would probably just keep it at f2, ya know? Ha!

I think I have the 200/2 at an aperture other than f/2 about 1% of the time. I think I used f/8 once for a lens test shot.

Oh and the funny tidbit, the first 200/2 I bought was from Brian at the-digital-picture.com (I later sold it, as I had a 300/2.8, but came back to the 200/2 about 8 months later)

That's pretty amazing when you think about it, I mean those shots are soooo sharp, and they're mostly at f2. That says so much about this lens. The simple fact that you can take f2 for granted and know it will produce incredibly sharp shots. I mean, on my 85 1.2II and my 70-200 2.8II I don't just walk around shooting wide open. I shoot wide open when the situation calls for it, but when I want the sharpest shot possible I close my aperture a bit. And I'm not knocking the 85 or the 70-200 because both are very respectable wide open, I'm just rambling on about how good the 200 is wide open I have the money to buy this lens at the moment, but I just can't pull the trigger. But that's a subject for another thread

The only time I didn't use f/2 on this lens was when i switched from a slower lens and forgot to open it up.

Canon should default aperture to max after one switched lens in Av mode!

Ok it is not at F2.0 but here is a recent shot from my 200 F2.0, it was an incredibly bright harsh sunlit day. Love this lens although the 20D I had it mounted on struggled a bit with it, focus was a bit slow to lock on.

But I love this lens and what it can do

BTW I use the 200/2 and 85/1.8 as an alternative to 70-200 / 85L / 135L. In the end this combo costs only $600 more, and the 85/1.8 focuses a heckuva lot faster. The image stabilizer actually makes a difference as it is canon's newer generation (like they have on the new 3/4/5/6/800mm and new 70-200).. good up to 5 stops... barring subject motion and a little bit of care, you can get crisp shots at 1/5 sec about 80% of the time.

Also makes for a good conversation piece.. which works in the context of weddings. For street photography, it's way too conspicuous.

Andrew, love this one. Was it stiched?

Also when you say 6 frames for the family one, did you stich those together or was it 6 attempts.

Amazing work!

Thanks for sharing.

I think this is a great example of an image type which will be cherished by that family for years if not generations.

This thread makes me wonder why I ever sold it. I want to mount it to my red one like, now.
