Bookmarked, thanks for the review. Trying to debate on a new setup that will last me years and do it right the first time, hoping to get the 200-400 in the future also.

I just received my CT-3442 and I can only echo his assesment of the tripod. Very solid and looks like it will last me for a long time. It's built like my old Bogen 3021 but less than half the weight. I was concerned that the leg locks would be time consuming but a 1/3 turn and the leg extends, and 1/3 back and it's tight.
I also purchased mine from Kerry at reallybigcameras.com. Shipping was super fast: two days from Oregon to NY state.
Now I just have to save my pennies for a new ballhead....

Got my CT 3342 from Really Big Cameras two days ago. Very good service and a very nice tripod.

Thanks for the 'review'. After looking at Gitzos for a few months, I decided to buy this exact set-up from reallybigcameras. I'll put it through its paces over the next few days, but for now the appearance of the tripod and ballhead look very nice. Time will tell.

I'm sure you'll enjoy it.

Mine has been going strong since I bought it, and I take it everywhere. I've hiked on LOOONG day hikes, put it in salt water, sand, dust, etc, and I haven't had a problem yet.

Does any one have the smaller PC-30N or PC-33NS, and can you compare them to a Bogen 488 ballhead? I would love to fit the ballhead AND tripod in the Feisol supplied bag (I currently have a 3441 non-S).

Great review, by the way. Very nice setup and pics.

I read your review here and there but I went with the 3342. I stuck with what I was used to (3 legs) being that I have the Manfrotto 055xprob but this one is 2.27lbs vs 5.07lbs plus it folds down a little more than 2" than the Manfrotto. I was concerned that the 3442's fourth leg would introduce some vibration. I compared the leg diameters and the Manfrotto top one is thicker than the 3342s but the other legs weren't. Btw, I photo mainly wildlife and use a Jo Bu gimbal head, flash bracket, 580 II and flash extender...1D3, 400 5.6, 1.4.

Thanks for the info. everyone

What's your thoughts on the tripod now that you've had it awhile?

Excellent review.

I'm curious, if you didn't have the center column kit, it would obviously reach lower to the ground (6.3" for the 3442 or 7.1" for the 3342. Would the ballhead still fit between the legs? It looks like it might, but I am not sure whether the leg wrapping would force the legs wider.

Yes, it still fits perfectly. I take my centre column out frequently for low ground work and I've had no issues folding it up after this. The only "small" problem is that it's harder to twist the panning lock b/c it's so close to the base, whereas the CCKit raises it up and give you room to put your fingers on it a little easier. That being said, I never hesitate to do this.

Great Review MrGreen, your review is a great help for people like me who are trying to buy a tripod set but aren't sure what to buy.

after reading your reivew I am almost certain that I would buy the same set up that you have, but was wonding if you have had any sort of issues with your tripod and the head over this period of time. also what do you think about the Induro CT214 is it worth considering.

thanks

Excellent review, and I'm glad to see all the good points, as I'm about to get a 3472LV.

I was slightly concerned about leg rotation, but no so any more. Plus the 3472 has much larger diameter legs, so they should twist even less, due to more surface area.

The only thing I don't like about the PC heads is where they put the level. Being on the side, it makes the larger level work for fore-aft leveling, when horizontal is really more important. That's rather picky, but why didn't they put the level on the front?

Well, Thanks.

I now use the 3342 to support my Jo Bu Pro Gimbal head and 500L. I'm satisfied.

Glad you liked my review. I wrote it from the point of view of someone just like you because I too was in your boat once.

First off, let me just start with I have been very happy with my tripod thus far and I do not for one second regret buying it. The tripod has worked very well for me and has afforded me many opportunities for photo taking that my old one never would have allowed for. It's great.

That said, yes I have had an issue with it. I had one of the upper leg locks completely become unglued from the carbon fiber tube. Sounds pretty bad, but really it's not. This happened about 6 months or so into owning it, so it was still well under warranty and "fairly new." I could post the pictures I took of it, but honestly it really wasn't a big deal. Nothing to freak out about either way.

I contacted the store I bought it from and was given the option to send it back for repair free of charge, or they'd give me instructions on how to repair it myself so that I could keep using it and not have any down time. I opted for the latter because I use my tripod A LOT! Hey, that's what I bought it for after all. Fixing it was pretty damn easy actually. All that was required was assembling the shims in a certain order and then super gluing the main threaded lock piece back onto the tube, wait overnight for it to cure and it was ready to go again.

Other than that I've had no issues with my tripod and would still buy another Feisol. Stuff happens and nothing is perfect as you know. I've read about the fabled Gitzos failing and needing to be repaired too. I believe this was a rare, or uncommon case at the least as I haven't heard of this happening much at all.

As for Induro I disregarded them when I was looking around for my tripod because they offered nothing in their product line that met the specifications that "I" needed. I'm sure they're a good company as many people use them, but I myself have no experience with them. All I know is the Feisol worked out to be perfect for me. Size, weight and the price were exactly what I wanted.

As for issues with my ball head - NONE. The Photo Clam has been astoundingly solid and flawless. I think any hesitation on people's part because they're "new and untested" should be completely disregarded now. They've been around for many years now and many people have used them to the extent where they can vehemently say they are awesome.

I've used two PC heads now (you can search for both reviews) and I really, really, REALLY like these heads.

I don't abuse mine by any means, but I most certainly do not baby it. I take it hiking all the time, it gets dirty A LOT, wet A LOT, and pretty much anything else A LOT! I've never cleaned it and thus far after heavy use it's still smooth as butter, locks tight and solid, and works like it did when I first bought it.

Photo Clam heads are AWESOME. There I said it.

Oh ya, about the level I would agree. It's not in the best spot, but it is useful. I've used mine a couple times, but for the most part I never level off the head because I shoot at very wide focal lengths and point the camera in odd directions.

MrGreen,

Thank you very much for taking the time to reply to my comments. You have convinced my into buying the tripod and the head, the same set up that you have.
I will post my thoughts on them when I get them

thanks again

I was about to buy the Feisol CT-3442 tripod with the photo clam PC-40NS, but then I saw an add on craigslist on the used but in very good condition Gitzo GT2540 + Markins Q-ball Q3 Emille ballhead + Markins TB-20 stabilization base for $650, is this a good deal.

I'm not familiar with pricing on those items. I'd suggest seeing what the retail prices are for all, add them up and see what kind of a percentage discount you'd be paying used.

Personally, I wouldn't pay more than 60% of retail for used gear, no matter what brand it is.

My Feisol came apart at the joints just after a year of use. I was told to mail it back to china and they would fix it. I fixed it myself but bought a real tripod to replace it. It was a bad investment.

Hmmm, that's very interesting. I would have thought there'd be more (a lot more) surface area for bonding the two parts together. Also, surprised Feisol wouldn't just drop a new top leg section in the mail to you, considering other stories I've heard about their customer service.

Just put together a few pics to show some of the differences in leg pivot sections -

one of my 2-series Gitzo's:

A grab from the Feisol site - their largest tripod:

I don't have any x-rays, nor have I ever seen a Gitzo with a leg separation (although I'm sure it's happened), but it looks like typically Feisol offers a much smaller area for bonding the leg to the pivot.
