Have any of you worked with this Profoto barndoor (505-521)for the standard grid reflectors? It's suppose to accept grids and filters directly without the need for the Profoto grid holder.
There is a spring-clip thing integrated into the bardoor frame. It seems like there should be something else included. I bought the barndoors as demo and I wonder if I'm missing something.
I bought a set of 7" Speedotron Grids trying to save a little money. Maybe they're just too small?
Thanks for your response. What is the diameter of the Profoto grids? I thought they were 7" as well.
No they are not 7". They are somewhat larger (maybe a metric size) and also a little thicker. I don't own any, so I can't measure one for you. Maybe some other Profoto owner has some and can give an exact answer.
I'm not at the studio right now, or I would measure them for you. A good guess would be about 7 3/4" for the profoto grids. I use both the standard 7" by speedotron (or any other manufacturer), but those fit my older 7-inch grid reflector. And I have some of profoto grids that fit perfectly in their new zoom reflector. But regarding the barndoors, you will need the grid holder adapter thing, as mentioned above.
The profoto grids actually only measure about 7 1/8" across. But the 10 degree one I have is nearly 1" deep. For what it's worth, the other speedo grids I have, while considered 7", only measure just over 6.5"
Thanks for the measurements. My speedo's are only 6-5/8's as well. If they were a true 7 inches, I think the grids would actually sit on prongs that stick out of the bardoors over the edges of the reflector and under a spring clip that is part of the barndoor designed to hold something in place. These diameter of these grids is too narrow. Anyone aware of another after-market grid set that is closer to a true 7"? The profoto reflector is 7-1/8 as you indicated.

FWIW, the Calumet grids measure 6.5" in diameter and they're slightly loose in a speedo reflector but fit well into an AB reflector. These are the standard 7" reflectors.
Profoto is probably trying to be weird so you have to buy their accessories
Most of the vendors do that - odd dimensioned softboxes, beauty dishes, so you aren't able to fit other vendor's grids, etc. Some is likely due to metric vs imperial dimensions, but some...
Of course they're thinking like vendors not photogs who are always trying to get $1.25 in value for a $1.00 ;>
