I encountered a similar situation when purchasing the 40D through US1Photo when the the camera was first released.

This was still during that initial "craze" to acquire the camera and I was surprised to find it available. It was advertised as USA version and shipped very quickly, but camera 1 had the battery installed, ~600 actuations, lcd protector removed and left in the box, etc. Replacement camera had a defunct LCD and came in a kit lens box with no kit lens. I gave up after the second try.

Soon after, I purchased two more from B&H and Costco and they arrived 100% ok.

You may well have ordered from a reputable vendor all three times, but I envision that there is little stopping folks at some retailers from tinkering with the latest and greatest items before shipment. I can't imagine any electronics manufacturer would allow such things to leave an assembly line, but maybe they do?

Call me a noob, but what's a light shield plate?

Anyone got a picture of what one looks like were it to exist on a 5D II?

I got my 5D2 about a week ago (from Kamera Express) and I haven't found anything wrong with it... yet...

I am pretty anal about changing lenses with the camera pointed down to minimize the chance of dust dwindling down onto the sensor, so I haven't actually taken a peek into the mirror box yet. I'll have a look see when I get home tonight and keep my fingers crossed until then...

I believe it is a half moon shape piece of metal right below where the red dot is, also has foam attached at bottom that the mirror hits.

why havent you checked each purchase in the shop before you leave, i know we shouldnt, but what ever i buy new or second hand i will always use it in the shop for about 20mins. and i take my laptop, sit in a quiet corner and inspect teh results.

Luck, Karma, checking in the shop... You guys make it sound I did something bad or I deserve this mess somehow...

Bottom line is that Canon *appearantly* brings stuff to the market that doesn't function properly or that is missing vital parts...

Luck should have nothing to do with it... You pay good (and a lot of) money for these items... There is nothing wrong with expecting things to work as advertised or to be complete. The fact that Canon seems to be unable to pull this off (at least in my case) proves to me that Canon doesn't have its act together anymore... NOT that I have bad luck or whatever...

Please, keep it real.

The 5D2 is a cutting edge product that was just released and is in very high demand.

Not saying you shouldn't be disappointed, but this is kind of thing happens all the time with consumer electronics devices. It's the risk you take as an early adopter.

Don't exaggerate the risk. The vendor or Canon are sure to replace or repair it. If you have the patience.

My 5D2 doing OK so far.

Well, the risk of being an early adapter should be a matter of accepting a certain level of flawed design. Missing parts is not flawed design, but a matter of the level of QC rigour.

So... no, Canon doesn't get any more money from me. I am done with sponsering such amateurism.

Well, it is an amateur camera,even if non-amateurs use it. I suspect Canon's level of QC rigour is designed in line with the fact that it is an amateur camera.

Faster, better, cheaper--we only get two. Which two have we as a market been most demanding? Which are we willing to surrender?
