p.2 #1 · BG-E2N Alternative - Phottix BP-40D

Seems like the Phottix is a pretty close match to the Canon grip.

The only thing that is different is the texture not being on both sides. The Phottix does have a battery door compartment (Next to the battery compartment shaft) and it can also take AA's, you may not have been provided with the cartridge necessary.

Cheers
Rowan

Thanks...now spotted where to store the battery compartment door...I'll get back to the seller about the other bit. I guess they had to leave the texture off both sides to avoid being accused of doing a direct copy of the Canon grip. Do they do a grip for the 5D?

good thing he put "copyright ..." on all those pictures. shame if someone steals them and makes bazillions of dollars with the bootlegged images.

Actually the BG-E4 grip doesn't have the fake leather texture on the battery door either. The grip for the 5D and 10D have the grippy texture on the battery door.

Overall, extremely good for the price. A couple of quick notes: Online there have been reports of issues getting 6.5fps, i did a rudimentary test with a remote release and timer, and seemed to comfortably get 6.5fps, maybe people were using slow cards, had high-iso NR on, i dont know.

I'm pretty sure the 40D is only rated at 6.3fps though...are you sure you get an actual 6.5fps?

The 40D has the same mechanisms as the 50D, which is also 6.3 fps. At the 40D's release date, camera companies were only required to state accuracy to the nearest 0.5, not to the nearest 0.1

henrys has the bg-e2n for $120 brand new, with an extra bp-511a and a tamrac bag. personally, i think that's a better deal, and you're keeping it all OEM

I just did continuous set of images over a number of seconds then when the buffer was full, divided the number of images by the number of seconds, voila, approximate fps, very approximate i might add, but for me its fine, i don't think i could actually measure the difference between 6.3 and 6.5 fps anyway.

Im in the UK and the BG-E2N is roughly £110+. I got the BP-40D for £50ish (inc. postage). Half price & i didnt need more batteries because i had 4 Sterlingtek on the way. I'm not really bothered about the Canon badge on a lot of stuff to be honest.

By the way i meant to mention that Hong Kong Supplies (or Phottix themselves, im not 100% sure which) will be at PMA this year so you folks will get a chance to see their stuff all up close and personal and whatnot.

Cheers

I have a noticeable gap between the body and Canon BG-E2N near the camera battery opening which I find unacceptable given its price.

Because of this, I have decided to return it. I'm thinking of getting the Phottix grip with 2 batteries instead since the quality seems to be about the same but with a big price difference.

Great pics and review. Thanks. This looks like quite a viable alternative, especially considering the Canon option is not exactly perfect. I was never thrilled with my grip on the 20D.

The same grip has worked better for me on the 40 and 50D, strange though it sounds. No more Err99 on heavy lenses.

I ordered the Phottix grip with 2 batteries. The batteries were only a few more dollars so I will give them a try. I'll report back when the they arrive.

The Pop Photo review of the 40D indicated the 40D was slightly slower than Canons specs--6.3fps. I'm guessing Canon merely rounded it up but decided with the 50D to spec a little more precisely...

Just received my Phottix BP-40D grip. The grip is about the same quality as the Canon but much less expensive and the 2 included batteries just sweetens the deal even more.

Is that the one with the interval timer built in? I'm curious to know how well
it works? If not then enjoy anyway

No timer on mine. It is almost identical to the Canon BG-2EN and comes with 2 BP511A equivalent batteries. Shipping was slowwwwww (almost 3 weeks) but worth the wait.

Interesting. I'm currently waiting for one of the grip deals from Henry's but after waiting over 6 weeks with no updates or responses to my messages on shipping status I'm ready to cancel the order and get another grip from B&H... But now that I see this grip, I might reconsider my options...

Anyone in southeastern Michigan with one of these that I can check out?

Jon.
