Hi,

I am thinking of getting the 5D MK II for my R lenses as well. Is your 19mm R a ROM lens? I was thinking of using Live View with this lens. It looks like this will not work.

Mine is the ROM version with built-in filter turret.

The live view should work. The position the mirror rest is higher than the shroud's position when mounted.

The live view (of my 5d2) would not work as "thrice" has mentioned that the plastic part of the mirror holder extends below the mirror and this part interferred with the shroud.

Thanks a lot for sharing your experience. it's veyr nice to see the 19mm in its full glory. I can only use my imagination here..

I was actually contemplating to shave the lens the past few days. Now it seems that it's easier to shave the mirror. Need to think again ... my thinking is that if i shave the lens, i can use it on future genrations of Canon cameras. if i preserve the lens, i got to shave every new camera. (i have not intention of getting a Leica DSLR in the forseeable future)

How do you focus?

Even though i can't take pictures but i could mount and play with focusing (hey, it's better than nothing

). It's still difficult to focus accurately with the EG-S screen. With AF confirmation chip, the focusing agreed with the distance scale on the lens. The distance scale on my 19mm is accurate as I use it quite often with the 20D in low light situation when I can't see a thing through the viewfinder.

One thing I would suggest to others considering the same thing: shave the mirror (and plastic assembly holding it) evenly. Don't have more shaved off in the middle, because the mirror (in my case at least) hits the shroud on the sides, which lines up with the left and right edges of the mirror.

No processing besides an auto-tone (all it did was pull down the blacks a bit) and sharpen for screen in lightroom when exporting. This is wide open at f/2.8.

That looks great.

In regards to the vignette, it is just part of the lens design and the way it hits the sensor, not the hood. It vignettes on film too. When you shoot a ROM version on a Leica DMR digital, some of the Vignette is corrected in camera. Hopefully this feature will be in the R10 too.

In regards to shaving the lens or shaving the mirror, in two or three years, the lens will be worth a lot more than your 5DII. I wouldn't risk shaving a lens. The repair can be over $1000 if anything goes wrong.

Yeah my logic was a new mirror box is $300-400 new mirror is $50 here... New lens in this condition might be impossible without a LOT more than I paid. Mint for 1350 in box with all accessories and packaging.

Sorry to resurrect this thread but I didn't know where else to post it, I managed to attach a 72-77mm step-up ring to my 19mm elmarit. I got a very small rubber band and stretched it around the barrel, I then wiggled the stepup ring over it and used my fingernail to nudge the rubber band fully under the ring.

It doesn't seem likely to come off without significant force (or pinching the rubber band out) and the rotational friction is huge so I can tightly screw filters on/off. I had to push it on to the point that the flat part of the step-up ring was below the original front of the lens barrel, otherwise I got vignetting with my CPL, but it still doesn't touch the barrel or lens.

And here is a shot wide open showing no extra vignetting. This lens always produces extreme falloff in the very extreme corners with my adapter because I think it is a little to thick.

EDIT: sorry for noise in shots, I didn't feel like getting the tripod and it's a very dark gloomy day round here.

EDIT2: dang, didn't realise these were in adobeRGB, didn't realise Safari for windows was colour aware, but it appears it is, I'll fix that now.

Oh I have no clearance issues anymore. I have a well shaven 5D-II mirror and almost anything clears it

I met a lady at the beach at sunset tonight and she was like "what're you shooting"... I was like "oh the sunset?" She goes "no your camera" and I was excited cos she noticed my Leica and she followed up with "Canon 5D, same here!" and she continued shooting the sunset with her 5D, 24-70 and 580 EXII flash firing. I wonder how her shots came out, here's mine from today:

thrice, as you may have noticed, i've changed the title of this thread to a more general title which is better for searching (I hope). You've contributed lots of valuable information here and my original message title doesn't do your and other's contribution any justice. This should be your thread.

Attaching the step-up to the 19mm was a fantastic idea! Unfortunately, I've decided to sell my 19mm

so you mean you attached the step up ring with a kind of large rubber O ring? is that what you meant? i would be very interested too.. A wide lens without possibility for ND or polarizer filters is a bit nonsense..

I used a little purple flat elastic band, it was about 2cm diameter before stretched around the lens barrel. It's a 72->77mm step up ring. I use a normal (non-slim) 77mm B+W UV filter and a singh-ray lb warming polarizer in a slim 77mm mount. No additional vignetting from either filter.

For the ND grad I use the cokin p universal mount and push it onto the lens barrel from behind the filter (have to take the lens off the body to put the holder on) it allows the single nd filter to be held *just* in front of the polarizer, avoiding reflections and vignetting. Here's one from this morning with this setup:

If the bride photos on the above link are indeed from the Version One 19-R lens, then it may be a very underestimated lens. Those look fantastic !

I couldn't bring myself on many occasions to shave the lens or the camera. For me, any unuse or rarely use lens has to go no matter how fantastic it is or how much I'm attached to it.

Didn't want to start a new thread...my apologies for bumping this one up. But I wanted to note that this lens outresolves the 7D sensor...and gave me a good dose of the evil that is Bayer filtering.
