p.1 #1 · White box lens

hey all.... hoping you can help me. What is the difference ebtween a white box lens and a non white box? B&H lists white box and non white box versions and usa vs. import for the 28-135 IS lens. I know the difference between USA and Import, but I had never noticed the white box/nonwhite box until someone asked me and I couldn't answer the question.

Body/lens kits also come with a white box. The diff is the standard box may be sold for as much as $50 to anal retentive photogeeks on the FM Buy & Sell forum. The white box is worth little to nothing (although perfectly functional). The lens is exactly the same--but who cares about that...

If the lens carries a one year Canon warranty, it's brand new and from a kit. If it's a 90 day warranty, it's a refurb. Also, B&H normally lists refurbs in the Used section with a note to email them re condition.

How do you really feel about it? Don't sugarcoat it next time.

Sheesh... I have a crap load of perfectly clean and virtually unused Canon lens boxes stored in my attic (safely sealed in larger boxes, of course). If I could get $50 for each...!!!... Or, maybe hold on to them for awhile longer. They can only go up in value. Maybe I can sell them to help fund my retirement in 10 years?

(Not really, I'm actually retiring in 4 months, but I thought it would come across as funny!)

B&H says this on their 28-135 page B&H: "Note! White Box merchandise comes supplied in a plain white box, instead of the manufacturer's colorful packaging. It still includes all the manufacturer's accessories."

These are almost certainly kit packages that have been broken up. B&H can make more money this way because the camera + lens sold separately are over $100 higher than the cost of the kit.

Yes... I saw that explanation on their page, but knew it wasn't completely the whole story. I am sure that breaking up the kits allows them to make some more money when they sell them seperately as you've stated, but I bet it also comes down someone ordering a body only package and only having a kit in stock at the time, so they break it up and then sell the lens as a white box.

It also happens to be the case that we get 'em this way from Canon USA and it is they, not B&H, who've broken up a kit.

Interesting...wouldn't have thought that Canon did that.
