Here in Ireland the sun has already departed, and will not rise again until 2009. Coumeenoule is a wild beach, facing the Atlantic, at the westernmost tip of Co Kerry, and this was the scene at last light. A Happy New Year!
C&C welcome!
Make that +2 -- I like the balance of light and dark as well. I also like the sky as well, really gives you the sense that its the end of the day.

Wonderful drama here. I think as a big print I'd want just a hair of detail in those rocks, and I don't think it would take away from the drama. Nicely done, and excellent choice of shutter speed for those waves.
Thanks for comments. It is a moody treatment, all right. I found myself getting more and more interested in the light on the foam, and that's what I went for when I was processing this version, choosing not to recover detail in the rocks, in the version posted here. I do agree, Floris, that some detail would be desirable in a print, as the shadows in this treatment are a bit categorical!
It's a tricky place - these rock pinnacles only start to be played with by the waves an hour or so before high water, and you are hemmed in, in a tiny space with vertical cliffs behind you, and a climb over a tall rib of rock your only escape route if you linger too long! The strand is open to the direct Atlantic rollers, and normally the waves are huge. It happened to be unusually calm on this occasion, thank goodness, but once I'd captured this first swoosh of water through the rocks, I made a dash between waves to terra firma. It'd be a great place to cure people with advanced cases of "just-one-more-shot"-itis! The stance is quickly lost in deep and fast-moving water...
I love the drama of this. It certainly looks very moody and mysterious, and conveys a proper sense of awe at the power of the Atlantic ocean, which shaped this jagged coastline. I like the sense of motion in the swirling surf and the brooding sky.
I love the drama and atmosphere here. The effective and evocative sky and the way the water surges through the huddled, hunched stacks are breathtaking in combination. A magical, almost spooky, picture that appeals to the celtic in me!
