Has anyone recieved any more information about the new CPS system and when they are going to take on new members again? I'm currently a CPS member but I was sent an e-mail that everyone would have to re-apply and pay the fees to whatever level you want to. I blew a shutter on my 1DMKIIn tonight and I'm sure Canon is not going to allow the CPS usage when they are killing the old system. I'm sure I'll be a member again, but not sure how long the new application process is going to take. I still have my 1DMKIII to shoot with, but I hate going on an assignment without two cameras. Luckily I was going to sell this as I had a deal on a 1DsMKII, but now I cant do the deal without being able to sell the 1DMKIIn.
So anyone know when they are going to be back up and running? Yeah I know I can send it like "normal folks" but it will take a month to get it back.
I believe CPS is still operating as normal. The email you got said that everyone's membership will run out at the same time (sometime in spring 09).. meaning when the new plans implemented the old CPS will be discontinued.
Call them up and find out.. but I'm sure you will find them all there working away.
They are operating as normal until the new membership starts. At that point, you'll re-apply with the "new" criteria.
There's three levels a monetary, and an equipment requirement.
At least this is what I was told by Canon's VA call center just this November.
The way I understand it is that they are as normal until the end of the year or possibly a little longer. So they will still honor your existing CPS, or at least they should.
Matt, it certainly shouldn't take a month to get it fixed even without CPS. My longest wait was I think 13- or 16 days, and most were within a week.
OK I just re-read the e-mail and it does say sometime first quarter 2009.
RobertLynn last time I sent a pro body in for clean and checkup it took over three weeks to get it back. My 5D went in recently and it was about 10 days. All of this through CPS. I'll package it up and send it out on friday and see what happens. I'll also give them a call. Thanks.

BTW I wanted to ask, doesnt less then 60K seem kind of early for a 1DMKIIn to lose a shutter. I've lost one before on a prior 1 series but it was well over 200K when it did it. and it was a 1D classic.

I have heard of one going at 20k, with the number of these cameras on the market your bound to get a few sour grapes out of the bunch.
OK I just checked the last file it took and its 58642. I'm not pissed, heck new stuff breaks, just usually you see stuff either last forever or break early. And to make it worse I have a championship game tomorrow night, and starting next week I have work every night. Oh well, I'll keep my fingers crossed that the 1DMKIII keeps ticking along until I can get my 1DMKIIn back.
I'd forgotten about CPS, there was supposed to have been an EU launch this year ~~ CPN but existing CPS was to be carried over ~ but nothing, to my knowledge, has happened.
NPS [Nikon] required two pro cams and two pro lenses and a list of clients [when I was with them 5 years ago] seems like Canon are introducing a similar model.
And yes it's a tad unusual, but not unheard of, for the 1D shutter to fail early.
You'll just have to shoot the blazes out of the MKIII to ensure your keeper rate. It does take lovely pictures, but is a bit frustrating that too often the ONE you want is the one the MKIII gave up on.

That's odd that it took you so long.
Where are you located?
You should have the green "rush" labels since you're a CPS member, which entitles you to a 3-5 day turn around.
60K seems a little low for a 1 series to lose a shutter. I'd say that it only has 60K clicks on it, and see if they would replace the shutter as a courtesy. Worst they can say is no.
Theytold me the reason it happened was that alot of press agencies sent stuff in before the Olympics and they were just over whelmed with work. Dont know if thats true or not. Because I even spoke with them ahead of time telling them when I would send it and what needed done and when I needed it back. I took a vacation and sent it in before I left and was still without a camera when I got back. I'm in Missouri, and I send my stuff to NJ.

I dont have those issues with my 1DMKIII, never have and I have about 20K actuationson it now. Out of 500 shots last night, I had about 85-90% sharp photos with both cameras.

Matt, I'm surprised Canon hasn't answered these questions for you. You have called CPS and asked, haven't you? Are they just blowing you off and not telling you anything?
Every time I've called CPS they've been very helpful and answered any question I have. I just sent in a 70-200 lens last week and they acted like everything was the same as it's always been. In fact, I spoke with Sal in the NJ facility just yesterday about the lens. They've alwasy been very responsive when I've called so I'm surprised you haven't gotten an answer from them.
Quite a few people on FM have reported their shutter dying at about 20,000 operations. More so than any other count such as 50k or 100k. It seems as if they were likely to last a long time if they got past 20k but of course there is bound to be a smattering of failures at any shutter count (within a few k).
I've heard the same thing about the shutter nuking out. I've also read at least once or twice that Canon fixed it gratis, because a 1 series body should last longer. I've also read that people had to pay for the shutter replacement.
I shudder to think what the shutter on my 5D will cost, or even when it will go out.
Sorry guys, I had a bit of oral surgery yesterday and havent really gotten things in order to call Canon.
Scott I did speak with someone at CPS and they told me as of now things are as they always were. I just need to send it in and have it looked at. Oddly enough the camera now fires the shutter perfectly. I hadn't taken the battery out or swapped them. When I swapped out the battery it now actually works. Is it possible for the battery to cause something like this. The battery doesn't seem to want to charge properly either it flashes the lights on the charger weird. Its a factory battery too. I think I'll still send it in to have it looked at. Edit to add, I put the old one back in and I get the same problem with it, just black frames. But no battery indication problems.

I had a Mark IIN shutter fail at around 70-80K within the first year. So far the shutters on both of my Mark IIIs have held up well.

I'm on my second blown 1Ds II shutter at 35k...... first one went at 7k. My 1D III is probably nearing 100k, however.
I'm not a CPS member as Canon Austalia want FULL PROOF that I make the MAJORITY of my income from professional gigs, not just the occasional weekend. I just had a 35L repaired with a four week turnaround and the same problem resurfaced two weeks afterwards.
