p.1 #1 · p.1 #1 · Pentax to EOS alt lens questions..Newbie content!!

Hey all,

I will preface this by saying I am extremely new and ignorant to the alt lens world. I am very intrigued by all the countless possibilities.

With that being said I currently own a Canon XTI and 85mm 1.8 lens. I love this setup and purchased it strictly to capture the birth of my little one (low light) . As she is getting older I am starting to gain interest in more alternative shots and focal lengths. I've learned my father-in-law has a nice collection of older Pentax gear (80's I bel.) just sitting in his basement. Before I propose to borrow or possibly buy any one it from him I was curious how the process works.

I understand I need an adapter ring. I've seen 2 types..one with a chip and one without. I am still learning the photography thing and shoot 99% in AV mode. Will I still be able to do this with alt lenses?

Basically I'm curious what losses (auto) I can expect to encounter when experimenting with alternative glass.. (metering, wb, aperature)

Also I guess this is a Pentax question. What can I look for on his lenses to know if they are K mount or not.

Blessings and thanks for your time
M

You can adapt pentax k-mount bayonet (likely what he has) to EOS without having to make modifications to the lenses if you're using an APS-C camera like the xti.

Adapters can be found relatively cheaply on ebay, I would recommend one with focus confirmation in case he has very fast (large aperture) lenses.

Welcome to FM. Your father-in-law's collection is probably either the older M42 screw mount or newer Pentax-K mount, or maybe a mix of the two. Both can be adapted to EOS bodies, and some of them might be really fantastic, even by modern standards.

WOW!!! Thanks for all the prompt feedback. Actually talked with him tonight and he says he has a collection of Nikon stuff as well... He's kind of funny about stuff so I'm trying to figure out how to word things in hopes of borrowing some of it.

Anyways thanks again...looks like a few hours of reading in my future.

Blessings
