I'm a 19 year old university student that wants to go into wedding photography. I shoot with a Canon 5D, 70-200 F4L IS, and 28-135 IS. The 28-135 is fine, but for wedding photography I need something faster and sharper. I'm saving up for a 85L II for the beginning of next year but my main concern is the wide-angle lens. The choices I had in mind are the new 21mm ZE distagon or the 24L II. I'm a sharpness freak and leaning towards the 21mm distagon because of the claimed corner to corner sharpness and nonexistent CA. I was just wondering how much the AF and 1.4 aperture on the 24mm would help me. I would probably shoot at F2.8 and smaller (more DOF and corner sharpness) for landscapes and people shots anyway. Your input and thoughts are appreciated. =)
I'm in the Toronto area and I visit Calgary quite often. If anybody needs a second shooter I'll be more then glad to come and shoot. I have never done a wedding before but I have two weddings in Calgary next year already booked. I really want to start now but can't seem to give out any free wedding shoots. Funny how we're in a recession and I can't find a couple to give out a free wedding shoot. =P
Sweet shots in your gallery and I dig the clean design.
The ZE won't be as much help as the 24L for weddings. You will need the speed in low light situations. However, I would recommend renting or borrowing one to get a better idea first hand.
I will definitly try both lens out. I was thinking a 21 distagon and 35L would be the perfect solution for optimum sharpness and low light capability but money is limited. =(
I guess I'll go for the 24L. Attach it to a 1.6x Canon 40D teleconverter and you get a 35L. =P
I meant using the 40D as a 1.6x teleconverter. Because of the crop factor the 24 becomes a 37ish 1.4 lens right? Just like how a 1D III becomes a 1.3x teleconverter... Or is my logic messed up? =P

No, you're correct. If you use a cropped body, it'll squeeze in the shot. My brain picked up 'teleconverter.'
I would also say to stick with your 5D though. It'll last you a very long time and save you some cash for more important things, such as lenses. Pick up a used 5D as back up when you start to shoot weddings.
If you want the extra reach, use a zoom or your feet.
Asimsoofi, I would like to use a 5D instead of a 40D whenever possible. And I definitly believe in the zooming with feet idea; primes gives me a "careful conscience" to actually realize what I'm doing. Zooms on the other hand, I just turn the barrel and take the shot haha.
The only problem is that I believe 35L is not wide enough. A 21 distagon, 35L and 100/2.8 macro would cost the same as a 24L II and a 85L II. Sigh lol. Too much thinking about gear and too less time taking pictures. =(
I'm studying in UTSC right now. Didn't know that York was on strike at all. But thank you so much. Send me a pm or whatever you want if you ever need a second shooter. Thanks. =)
I had no idea tpmg existed. I figured that something like this was out there, but never searched. I may just have to join. York's "photo club" doesn't really seem to exist - I've emailed with no reply.
I'm from Toronto...I just don't live there anymore.
Looking forward to going back next year to catch up with my family and take loads of pix.
All the best
