p.1 #1 · Walk around combo?

We've all heard of a walk around lens. But, does anyone use a walk around body? What I mean is a light weight body, maybe without a battery grip, that you carry when you don't want to haul around that heavy expensive body.

What made me think about this is that I'm selling my 40D since I bought a 50D. But, I've also thought about just keeping the 40D and using it without the grip with the 24-105 lens to use as a walk around combo.

So, how about you? Do you have a walk around combo?

50D or 40D would make a great walk around body with a 17-55 2.8IS.

Anything smaller, you might as well get a G9 to walk around with, if quality isnt a huge concern.

That 24-105 is a beast for walking around, get a tamron 17-50 f2.8 and that's all you need for a whole lot of walking around.

Actually, right now, my walk around camera is a G7. Great little camera.

24-105 4.0 it's 38-168mm on a cropped body. No way it's a beast.

I wouldn't mind carrying the 24-105. It's relatively light weight. But, to each his own.

I'm surprised that the 24-105 is getting so little love.

I LOVE the 24-105, but the question is about a walkaround combo that includes a 40D, the 24-105 is 25 ounces and doesn't balance well on the 40D. Return the 50D, keep the 40D, buy a used 5D, slap the 24-105 on the 5D, and then you will have the best walkaround combo known to man.

I would keep the 40D as a backup or when you want 2 bodies to avoid lens changes. My wife and I each have a 40D and I keep a 18-55 IS / 55-250 IS combo as a lightweight kit to keep on the second camera.

I'm thinking for the shot, not what I have to carry. I want the distance of the 55mm to 105mm that is missed with most of lenses.

I walked around the Tidal Basin in DC last year for the Cherry Blossoms with a 40D, 24-105 combo, never took it off, had a 10-22mm in my bag. Plus the IS gave me two stops more when I was shooting the water falls at some of the Monuments.

I have a 5D which I love. But, I'll probably trade it for a 5D Mk II when the prices come down.

You have a lot of cameras, and you already have the best walkaround camera there is. I would keep the 5D, and trade the 40D for the MkII. Good Luck, Derek

Wow, I think the 24-105 F4 L is the best for walk around, at least it's my favorite.

The 24-105 on my 40D or my 5D was my walk around lens. It's now D700 and 24-70.

I walk around with a light top loader bag, and the 5D2 and a 2 of these 3 : 35L, 50L, or 70-200L 2.8IS.

To me it's no big deal, but we all different thresholds before we feel like pack animals.

My walk around is XTi + Tamron 17-50 2.8. Unbeatable price-performance ratio at its time.

But as I like to shoot with several alt lenses, I think I will upgrade to XSi or 40D when I can.

5D and 24-105L. If I want to add a second lens it's either the 16-33L II or the 135L depending on which one I think I might use more. If I want to go ultra lightweight (for a DSLR) then it's an XT and 17-85 IS.

I shoot all of my professional and landscape work with a 1Ds3 and 1D3, but also have a Rebel XSi(450D)/Tamron 17-50 2.8 and a Panasonic LX3 for family outings/vacations etc. I take the Rebel XSi when I believe there's a high probability of photo opportunities (a walk on the beach etc), and the Panasonic LX3 when photography isn't the purpose of the outing, but a "just in case" I have a camera in my pocket.

+1 for the XT and the tamron 17-50 2.8 (or I use the Canon 28-135 is too) the XT with grip still fits in my backpack, my 30D with grip... not so much.
