I have the later one with pullout hood, wonderful wonderful lens, probably the closest to perfect I have ever used. Bokeh is much nicer than the C/Y IMO. First version Summicron might have a bit better bokeh, but it doesn't have the same pop that later one does (and I think the design is kind of ugly too). Mine came from Canada. I don't think it is boring at all... more like just perfect.

Not to get into a debate, but consensus on many Leica boards that I've been on is that there is no difference between the second version from Canada and newer lenses marked Germany... some say the same optics from Canada were just assembled in Germany... I don't know... do your own searches on the subject and make up your own mind.

Any of the versions will have a very nice "Leica look" and the EF 50/1.4 is kind of mediocre until stopped down.

I only have got the first version. Its inner filter thread is around 44mm, definitely not 48. It's a series VI thread, and I have not found the srew-in adapter ring for it yet. At least I've got the original snap-on hood for it.

The lens OTOH is really good, and should be even more so wide open on an APS-C cam, should you believe Erwin Puts' words. I have used about 30 manual 50ies and this one is in many ways 'the best'. Here's the rest of the story,

Yes, the first version filter thread is actually 43mm. I happen to have the old Olympus digital camera from 1998 that shares the same size of thread. The lens cap fits perfect.

I agree it is same optic formula but not same coating as you can see.
The coating made huge difference in terms of sharpness,contrast,corners and color accuracy.I can definitely see the results from both Summicron 35mm and 50mm.

The newer Canadian lenses will have the newer coating as well. The one pictured above is a fairly early version. I think once you get serial numbers over 3 million, the lenses are from the mid 1980's and later.

coatings make a "huge difference" in resolving power of a lens? Contrast and color perhaps yes, but for b&w photography, whatever tweak in coating is probably negligible.

Coatings have no effect on resolution - more contrast and flare reduction are what they do.

Im quite interested in this lens (as well as the 35mm f/2 version) , but there are seem to be so many versions & a huge price difference on ebay. The best version would be a german made ROM version from the 90s ?

The latest version was sold with and without ROM, and this makes no difference to the lens on cameras other than the R8/R9. There aren't that many R versions (3?), but there are very many M versions. Those cannot be used on reflex cameras though. Get the latest R version for maybe $300 or so.

Cool , Im looking to get one for 5dmk2 / 50D , Sort of undecided right now whether to go for 35 or 50 , its a focal lenght question that I to answer myself

, leaning towards the 50 though.

My latest 50 summicron with built in hood is a superb lens, better than my C/Y 50 1.7 but not much different from my Voigtlander 40mm F2 Ultron mk2. I think the Summi might just have the edge in the corners when stopped down but the Voigt has just got the edge for look of images.

Not trying to cause any discussion here but, just for the sake of information, I've done a 50mm test wich included the CY planar f/1.4 and the Summicron f/2 and I've reached the conclusion that, altough the Summicron is a trully great lens, the zeiss is superior on every aspect:

- better sharpness
- less vigneting
- better optical correction (the leica seems to give the objects a slight "fatter" look, you can actually see this effect on the bokeh circles)
- the bokeh isn't actually better than the zeiss at f/2 (I've learned that the zeiss has horrible bokeh at f/1.4 but at f/2 is good)

hey congrats man , ive seen the price mostly around the 200-300 USD ...which seems okay ... I would think this is the most affordable initiation into Leica glass one can have.

thank you, yea at first i wanted the 90mm f2 but i cant afford it at the moment

So its on my want list for now.

Any of you guys have experience with other bayonets then Leitax. Ive seen some quite cheap on ebay, 25£ i believe and the Leitax is 68£.

Anyone need an eos bayonet

Sr. Cordeiro thanks by the way for the information. Its also my understanding that the summicron 50mm might not be highest rated 50mm. But after reading 100´s threads about leica...well i just have to try it
