p.1 #1 · Need Help Please with finishing this photo up

Hi,

I am trying to add a Santa's Hat to the Gorilla. I have cut, copy and pasted the hat onto the Gorilla, sized, etc. How do I smooth out the edges as it looks not real? What do I need to do in order to finish this up? I have tried searching the net for tutorials, but no luck.

Please help. Thanks.

Michele

A few ways

Have the hat on its own layer , select the hat and add a mask to the layer , then apply gausian blur to the mask itself , if you have the mask reversed it will appear to not wont so if it dont work for you click in the mask itself and appy invert .

or
On hat layer select hat with magic wand , contract selection a few pixels then inverse selection so only just inside the edge to the outside is selected , either apply a blur , or knock the edge over by hand with the smudge tool .

You need to adjust the hue and saturation of both the hat layer and the green background layer to match the gorilla layer they are way too intense compared to the gorilla .

The white rim is burned out and to brilliant , it needs to be dirtied up a little and have the slightest tint of green to it as it would reflect the green foliage .

Its important the have all components on there own layer so you can adjust each separately , you can do it if they are all on the same the layer by using selections its just a little messier in cleaning up the edges .

Cheers Rod

Thanks Rod.

The hat is on its own layer as that was a separate image from the Gorilla. The green background is the original Gorilla image.

The first step sounds much easier so I will give that a try! I am so glad you are able to help. Thank you!!

You can also use the grass tool by sampling the colors and using it on the edges, you can sample two colors for a more convincing look . you can rotate the brush in the brush dynamics menu to go around the edges in the right direction.

Thank you. Unfortunately, you've lost me there... I am not very experienced with these kind of techniques in photoshop.

Mwassel, you could give it a whirl! That is how I learned just by experimenting and playing around

Dunno if this helps but I simply used the dodge and burn tool plus the blur tool to kind of help wrap it around the gorillas head a bit more and mimic the light in the original shot a little to give the hat a bit more look as if it was placed in the scene.

Hope this helps
