Thanks for the feedback everyone.
As far as posting images here, I simply do not have the time to post on every photography forum that exists on the web. I am much more active in a couple other photography communities that are of just nature and wildlife photographers, as I don't shoot other subjects any more. Admittedly I ignore FM for the most part, except for the Buy & Sell forum when I'm in the market for new gear. Understandably, I didn't expect a lot of feedback on this post, but do appreciate any that I get. The response so far is actually a bit more than I expected, so thank you very much for all those who have responded for reaching out to a stranger like me and offering some insight.
As per the larger images, regardless of the possibility of copyright infringement, they take longer to load, use up more web space and bandwidth, and don't fit as nicely into an easy to navigate layout. The size I chose works well with my blog, and prevents me from having to create many multiple web files of an image.
I can understand the argument with posting an image larger, but when someone sees something they like, I don't think they are going to pass it up just because they think its 200 pixels too short. I really dislike the look of a giant watermark across a photo, and only do it when I'm sending files to a client as a proof; I would never display images on my website that way. My photographs are very sharp and have a ton of detail, and short of posting a full res file on the web (or 100% crop) even a 1000x1500 pixel image downsized from any digital SLR isn't going to show an images weaknesses if sharpened in Photoshop. I have thought about posting some 100% crops on my purchase page, developing some sort of image quality page that is linked to from there, so I will investigate that further.
Thank you for all of the feedback so far. Of course I will not see eye to eye with everyone, but all of your opinions are valuable and can help me think about how to better design my site, even if I perhaps disagree. I think that such feedback can be valuable to others reading who may be developing websites.
