p.1 #1 · Gray Jay & Mule Deer

Winter is a good time to stay warm inside and be entertained by the local wildlife.
The Gray jays seem to be more frequent visitors. And a doe with her youngsters come to eat the ground covers that stay green close to the house and look for stray bird seed.

Nice capture on your gray jay Rob Guess I never thought to buy bird food to feed the deer.................do ya think the birds might care for a salt lick Glad to see you have visitors to keep you and your camera company, have fun, take good care.

I am feeling intimidated by that ominous avatar hovering overhead.........Tim

Thanks everyone for the nice comments. I was about two or three meters from the deer and the jay Nello. Do you really think he was looking for a handout Tim? I thought he just wanted to pose for me. The 50D seems to handle the higher ISO better than the Rebel.
It is against the law to put out feed that the deer can get in British Columbia Karl, but they make do with eating the ground covers and such that we didn’t deadhead in the fall. Peony stalks seem to be a real favourite. Bunches of lichen that come down from the trees in the winter are real treats. And they do hunt around under feeders. Good luck with the saltlick idea let me know how it works out for you.

Rob, those are very nice shots with lottsa detail.
One suggestion.....if you cropped less tightly around an animal then you kinda relieve the tension in the image.....the animal can breathe more easily, so to speak.

Thanks for the advice PetKal, I do tend to stuff the critters into a tight space. I'll think on that the next time I post.

Tim I used the Canon 70 -300mm IS, thanks for the comments.

Thanks Ed, the trick is not to let them eat out of your hand Ed. They sure are fun to watch in the winter.
