When I was a young AP stringer circa 1994 Emmitt Smith crashed into a photographer next to me, who then knocked me over. I fell on top of an AP 400mm 2.8 attached to my personal brand new Nikon F4. Nothing broke, not even me. I never fell for a fake again, not at least without keeping the other eye open down field.
I've broken gear since but that's my most memorable tale!
Dropped my OM-3 with motor drive and 300mm onto grass but did no damage. Simple enough: I was crouching down and when I stood up I didn't notice that I had my foot through the strap which meant the camera was wrenched out of my hand once the limit of the strap had been reached.
Same thing happened with my work camera (Sony DNW9 WSP) while doing Tsunami stories in Banda Aceh. That was on a bitumen road surface and the camera is a lot heavier but it probably didn't fall as far. Still works perfectly though, just a couple of extra scratches.
My Digital Rebel with the 24-70 2.8L along with myself and my brand new at the time Motorola Razor cell phone took a swim in a river. Sent to Canon NJ, and returned the Rebel minus the sensor and 24-70 sent back saying no luck. It hurt, big time. Still miffed as to why they removed the sensor from my seemingly dead camera.
I have the scars to prove I put my gear before myself tripped over a small boulder while on a hike holding my 1DMIII and my 500mm, all that went through my mind was save the gear. My jaw hit the ground so hard all I could do was see and hear for about 10 seconds before I could finally move. Still have the battle scars on my arms Yes I do have insurance and my girlfriend reminded me of that, I told her it was a guy thing
400D fell out of bag onto concrete. Screwed back together
Tokina 12-24 dropped, no damage
50mm f/1.8 II dropped many times, superglued back together many times
580EXII many times
430EX many times
5D Mark II dropped onto concrete when changing lenses...battered but not wrecked
85L II fell from my bed onto floor
40D and Tamron 17-50 pulled from table onto ground because I forgot CP-E4 cable was attached to my belt and walked away
Nothing has really required Canon fixing just yet, to Canon's credit most products are quite tough
When shooting winter landscapes a couple years back with my brand new 350D I fell on some ice, dinged the top part of the camera against some rocks bending the flash mount. Sent it to Canon, they checked the camera and replaced the flash mount. About 100€.
When doing a location shoot I used a couple of speedlights. Didn't tighten my 430EX enough and mid-shoot it dropped out of its mount on the lightstand and it fell around 170cm to the concrete floor. The screen cracked and the red plastic covering the IR Sensor flew off. Otherwise no damage. Didn't send it to canon because it still works perfectly. I did tape the red plastic back onto the flash.
Otherwise I've been lucky =) Haven't dropped anything else. Because of threads like these I always keep my camera gear in my backpacks in my closet on the floor, dropping them from that height shouldn't do much damage
Had a random error with my kit lens the 55-200mm. Kept giving me error99 when I used that particular lens to take photo. I took it off, banged it on a table. Works to this very day.
Had a 20D mounted to a 24-70mm F2.8L left on a speaker about 1.5metres high at an event. One of the stage crew moved the speaker and the camera dropped to the floor. Lens broke in half, 20D was fine. Ended up getting it fixed at a local repair store for $400AUD. New housing, new flex cables, new exterior pieces. Looks brand spanking new and is even sharper then it was before.
