p.1 #1 · ThinkTank Digital Holster 20

Hey folks, just wondered if anyone with a xxD / other brand equivalent was using the ThinkTank Digital Holster 20? I currently have the 40D and 17-85 which i would like to carry on a daily basis and the TT seems good.

What i would really like is a picture of someone wearing it for scale purposes, i have searched the forums/google/flickr etc. and not come across anything, & CamBags doesn't review the 20.

I will likely, at some distant point in the future be upgrading to 17-55mm as my walk around lens and 70-200 for hiking type photography, i generally only want to carry one lens at once.

Also, the TT is not waterproof, just wondered how 'water-resistant' it is. I live in the UK and as such it has an annoying habit of raining a lot, and i dont want to be getting the rain cover out for every light shower.

Any help/web pages you could direct me towards would be great.

Regards
Rowan

I use it with my 40D and either the 85mm (holster not extended) or my 70-200 F4 (holster extended). In both cases this is with the hood in the reverse position.

Unlike other holsters the 20 is sized perfectly for a XXD series camera, they have a different model (40 & 50) for 1 series or cameras with grips. It was the smallest holster by far that I could find to carry the above combination.

I can't really comment on water resistance, the bag is top quality so I would assume it can handle a fair amount of rain but the top zipper is exposed. It is very easy to get out and stow the rain cover. Of all the bags I have (Lowe Pro, Tamrac) the Think Tanks are the best in every regard.

David, thankyou for the positive input, it does look like it would suit my setup from what you are saying. I always reverse the hood at the moment anyway so thats no big deal, i probably wouldnt have to 'pop' it down ever at the moment!

I have the 20, but rarely use it, and much prefer using the TT "skin" chimpcage. With the bottom of the Chimpcage not extended, I can slide the 40D and 17-40 in sideways. With the bottom extended, it will accept the 40D with the 70-200 f4. The Chimpcage is a lot more compressible than the holster, and is much quicker to open and close, since it's top is a velcro flap, and not zippered, as is the holster. If I'm hiking or bike riding, I hang the cage from the front straps of my backpack, and drop the camera in it, but leave the camera's strap looped over my neck. If I'm not shooting, the camera stays in the "cage", fully supported by the backpack straps, instead of my neck, but is still ready for instant use. I use the "skin" belt as well, for times when I want the stuff on my waist. I often keep the camera in the "cage" in front of me, and lenses, flash, etc. in the beckpack hooked onto the skin belt. If I stop to take photos, and get serious about lens changes, filters, etc., I simply reach into the backpack, pull out the belt with whatever I have attached to it, and click it aroung my waist. The "skin" series weighs next to nothing, and is super compressible. The holster is heavier, more bulky, takes more time to get into, but does offer more protection.

TT has a cash back return policy. You could order both the holster and the skin cage, and keep whichever you like. If you go for the cage and the belt, also consider the skin small lens pouch. It's perfect for fitting a 580, 2 pocket wizards, and a Flip-It. It's even better than their dedicated flash pouch. It's no bigger than the flash pouch, maybe even slightly smaller, but because of it's dimensions, everything fits better. It'll also take a 70-200 f4. A 2.8 will fit, but not as nicely. Also great for carrying a water bottle.

Something to think about.

Harvey, thankyou, i wasnt aware of TT's "Skin" series. However, having looked at both i think i would like more padding for day-to-day basis than the Skins offer, plus being in the UK, ordering both and returning one etc. would be a bit of a hassle so i think i will stick to the Holster.

Thankyou

The skin chimp cage has two methods of attachment. The first is a velcroed back flap, which allows you to attatch it to a regular belt, or the skin belt. Quick and easy.

It also has two strong fabric loops near the top, on each side. You could attatch anything with snaps, or you could use a simple camera strap, like an Optech, and use that as a shoulder strap.

I'll try to post some shots of my setup in the morning, as everyone always seems to be searching for camera toting solutions. I've searched for years, and stopped when I began using the TT skin stuff. Just incredibly quick and flexible for a variety of different purposes.

Kenesis makes good holster bags. I have one for the 1D plus 70-200 2.8 IS with hood in shooting position. Very nice on a belt or I usually have it over the shoulder. Having to fiddle with the hood to turn it around is not something I'm interested in doing when what I want is to simply pull out the camera and shoot. I have the C640 and have used it a lot over the past few years...one bag that is a keeper.

Also have a LowePro bag like the above but the shortest version. Same deal as above but will hold a 1D plus shorter lenses, hood in ready to use position...which regardless of what brand I buy, is required.

I also do not like belts and all the weight and fuss so all of my hoster bags go over the shoulder. The extend thing on the TT bags was a little odd for my tastes, but others seem to like them. Get what works for your style of shooting, meaning, think about how you actually will use it and don't let a bag get in the way...not smart.
