Real world tests do have some value, but there are a quite a few variables in getting film back to pixels that a from-the-hip test like this is fairly useless from a scientific point of view.
(and don't tell Ken Rockwell this, he uses Costco for film scans & p&S film cameras to best his D3 daily. )
I saw that as well but if you watch they used 400 iso film and didn't specify the type, as also mentioned the type of digital transfer from neg-digital has a ton to do with it as well.
For a billboard shot I would have liked to have seen a real quality slide film used...
I really doubt that they spent all that money making these giant prints just to use stupid things to chance, but who knows... I really like how the guy in the studio couldn't help but look at his shots right after he took them every time.
wow, i remember seeing the first time they did this, i think it was a d100 they used. a 50 asa slide would be closer allright, but a 200 asa would still be well out.
I've got both... and have made some interesting observations my self... one of which is auto focus performance... the F5 will just focus non-AF-S lenses faster, and more agressively...no contest... The D700 is miles ahead in terms of VF... I miss not having the command dials on the verticle grip of the F5....
I'm not sure how anyone can be surprised by these results. Maybe if they were shooting old Velvia 50 the results would have been more comparable, even then I'd still take the 12mp camera.

But KR's photos would blow both of these totally out of the water. Even one of those cheap VGA cameras at wallyworld in KR's hands will outdo anything Ansel ever did. If you don't believe it, just ask him.
When God said "Let there be light" KR tried to tell him a universe with 2 suns would give more interesting light. KR finally made Jupiter, but God refused to touch a match to it. So it ended in a draw. God only wonn because he had the only matchbook.
