p.1 #1 · Is this 180mm a good lens?

I just picked up this 180mm lens for $60 on Craigslist, its an older lens but seems to take great pics.
There are a few minor problems though - 1) There are specs of dust inside the lens. I called Nikon and then said it would cost about $114-$150 to clean and calibrate. Should I do this?

My D700 should arrive in a week or so, but with my D40 everything on this lens is manual - focusing, metering etc. and its a bit of a pain (the metering part . Will this lens autofocus with the D700?

I have half a mind to sell it and get the 135mm F2 that I've been yearning for, but unsure.

Here's a picture of it - are there any differences between this lens and the new 180mm??

Wow, you got an amazing deal on an amazing lens! The only issue with the 180 is the AF can be a tad slow, but the optics are right on par with Nikon's pro glass. This will yield some great photos. Dust really shouldn't be a concern. It will not show up in photos and is more of a nuisance than anything else. If you want to sell, let me know...seriously. I've got an old MF version that I've been wanting to upgrade.

Optically, no difference from the current model.

You have the first version which featured the smooth plastic barrel and narrow focus ring. The second version came out with the metal barrel, wrinkle finish, and wider focus ring. The third version added the 'D' chip for distance communication with the modern matrix metering & flash systems.

All three version kick ass in terms of image quality.

You could easily turn that lens for 4-5x what you paid for it!

Thanks Chad and Gaylon for the info. This is a bit reassuring.
Besides the minor scratches on the outside of the lens, it seems to be in good shape.

I havent been able to fully test it yet (Manual focus is ok on the D40 but metering for me is a pain). I'll try to us it a bit more in the next few days

Works great on the D700. This is the oldest of the AF versions of the 180mm and has the smaller focusing ring but for $60 I would hold onto it.

Dont even bother with cleaning. Doubt that you'll even see anything in real photos...
Great job on the deal btw!

Nice score, and a great lens. It should autofocus fine on the D700.

Congrats on the great deal! And...it will meter on your D40

set the aperture ring to f/22 and push the little orange tab up, it should work fine.

Interesting - it doesnt seem to work.

When I set the Aperture to f22 and the orange tab (automatically) comes up, If I turn the camera on it says "no lens attached" and the "f - -" "?".
Am I doing something wrong?

Thanks!

Huh...that's quite bizarre. With digital bodies you should be able to control the aperture from the camera when you stop it down to f/22 and lock it - in fact, I thought it would display the f--- or ERR message when it's NOT like that. Maybe cleaning off the contacts on the mount would solve the problem, but I'm pretty sure that's how it's supposed to work.

Correct it should meter unless somethings wrong with it, i get the f-- error sometimes and all it takes is a little more twist on the mount and t reads, but like suggested above it might be a good idea to clean the contacts..

You still got a good deal even if it needs some repairs, if you decide you don't want to send it back for repair and want to get rid of it let me know...
