p.1 #1 · Tamron 18-270 vs. Canon 70-300

I understand the Tamron 18-270 VC has 15x zoom. How does this compare to the Canon 70-300 IS? What is the zoom factor on the 70-300? I'm also looking at the Tamron 28-300 VC. Can anyone help me with some advice?

The "zoom factor" is calculated like this:

270/18=15x

300/70=4.3x

So, the 70-300 is "only" a 4.3x zoom, but this tells you nothing about the actual reach of the lens.

The 300mm end of the 70-300 still gives you more "zoom" (reach) than the 270mm end of the 18-270.

Likewise, the Sigma 200-500mm has a zoom factor of 500/200=2.5x, but it's 500mm end is much longer, obviously, than the 70-300 (which is a 4.3x zoom).

It is likely best to abandon the term "zoom factor" altogether and learn about focal length.

If a lens has a very long focal lenght,it will be very, very slow AF and will be inaccurate.I own Canon 70-300mm and believe me it is true what the owners say about it:"the hidden L lens".And when you think that it's only 500$+the latest generation of IS you will realize what a great deal IT IS!

Thanks gabimaster, i am leaning toward this lens. I was just curious as to how the Tamron compared having a much wider short end. I guess it only makes sense, the more your focal length varies, the more your IQ will suffer.
