p.1 #1 · Your Impression #58 Nocturne

Hello,

This is my first post in this BW forum.

As I am relatively new to FM and you may not have encountered my work here on FM before, here is a little "introduction" to this BW forum as a courtesy.

I "rejoined" FM one year ago (in Dec 2007) and while I spend most of my time in the People Forum, I do shoot almost all of my images as B&W or B&W and later toned.

So far, I have only posted in the People forum and never put up a photo here. But, I do occasionally drop by and contribute a comment or two here, because I enjoy BW images and "think in BW."

For some reason today, I thought about a few recent "BW" images strictly as "BW." The prints look very nice with great gray tones and deep shadow details. Fun stuff for someone like me who likes BW images. So I thought someone here might enjoy seeing them too.

But, because I have posted a detailed introduction to the image in the People forum here on FM, I have decided to simply put a link to that thread/discussion here in case anyone wants to "follow the link" to see the image. A little forewarning, I only post a link to the images as I keep the images on my website pages devoted to the Impressions images. So you won't immediately see the image posted on the FM site, just the link. This was a business decision.

There is one basic thing about my image posts that some people like, and others don't understand (or get or like). It is that I post my photos via a link and the topic post is purposefully designed as what I call an "Impressions" discussion. The images are used to generate a discussion of how the image creates "feelings and emotions" or evokes "memories" rather than a discussion of the technical flaws or strengths of the image (as commonly seen in typical C&C critiques).

A casual viewer might not expect or understand, unless you have seen this type of Impressions discussion on the People Forum. IF you follow this link you will find a post called a "Impressions" style post. It contains lots of information about the back-story, the concept, goals, tools, and techniques used to create the final image. At the bottom of the post it also has a brief (long to some) description of the "Impressions" style discussion format.

Put simply, the Impressions style is about the "impressions" people get from the person or image. It is NOT about the technical aspects of the image, but rather about the emotional or "sensory" or "thoughts" that occur when viewing the image. All of this is described in the bottom of the introduction. So, if you like, take a few minutes to acquaint yourself with this type of discussion.

Why so much writing?
Simply because part of what I enjoy about the "photography" process is making an image, and part of it is understanding how images "affect" people's emotions and thoughts. That "impression" can be subtle or strong. Both are valid. It may be that someone likes an image for hard to describe reasons. Or they may not like it for other reasons. The key thing is that it is designed to get the viewer thinking about the image and how they respond. On purpose, it strictly avoids "technical" discussions or critiques because those often devolve away from "content" or "message" and usually wind up discussing tools, techniques for PP, or "flaws." There can be much more to an image than its parts.

It is also designed to elicit the participation from the many people who visit these forums as "lurkers" but who seldom post comments because they may feel they are not "qualified" to make any technical critique. I ask that people not get "off topic" in technical discussions, so that more people/visitors can discuss the images simply using their own intuition, emotional responses, and "gut feelings." So far, this has brought a number of people into the discussions who would normally not offer comments. I consider this good (as it was one of my goals) as I have received numerous PMs and comments from people who felt "qualified" to give an impression, but "unqualified" to give a technical critique (for whatever reason).

Anyway, that is my form of "contribution" to this forum and the type of discussion I prefer and find most interesting. So I ask that you stick to the "Impressions" if you would like to participate. IF you would like to participate in an impressions discussion, feel free to add your comments on the linked image.

Finally, I hope you enjoy the Impressions style and encourage you to try it yourself sometime using your own images. I find it much more interesting to read the Impressions comments and am often surprised, moved, touched, and amused at how a single image can cause such different emotions and "impressions" responses. It really can get interesting and I believe it allows the viewer to offer deeper comments on images they enjoy.

Here is the link to the introduction (and there you will find the link to the image) for my recent "Impressions #58 Nocturne." This image is the 58th Impressions discussion I have started in the last 5 months on FM. The image is one of several in a project devoted to Pianists.

p.1 #2 · Your Impression #58 Nocturne

Steadman, I have commented on many of your posts in the "People" forum so I will be the first here.
I found the composition very intuitive. The pianist eyes convey an almost immediate sense of , well something I can't pinpoint ..maybe....Some inner comment of "Yes, I have found the missing chord or yes, that musical bar completes the verse." She has the look of an immediate conclusion without any sense of immediate reasoning. If you will, the lightbulb above the head came on!
Maybe some divine or prophetic power being unleashed by her mind-finger coordination transferred onto the piano keys. Some spiritual intercession guiding her hands or mental thought process.
Some reporting, via the eyes, of her conscious inner thoughts or maybe a sensation or desire conveyed by her music.
A sense of "extrospection" versus introspection. She is looking, sensing, feeling or observing something external to herself and or her music.
A spiritual awakening if you will. Self reflection transferred through her fingers onto the keyboard. Her soul being "outside" her body manipulated by her fingers.
The woman has become one with her thoughts and music. We should all be so lucky in some way or another. Just as a photographer hopes to make the same connection in his images, the same conveyance.
This image invoked the same wonderment and thought to me. I could place myself on the piano bench and substituting say, camera, pen, brush, whatever device I may use to go "within" myself to lead to expression and extrospection.

Maybe even existential in that she is wondering, "well the logical musical chord, verse, scale progression is this BUT heh!, I want it to go this way..against the norm!
I may be babbling on now Steadman....
Well done and your images ALWAYS provide me with contemplation.
Dan

Hiya Dan

Nice to have this impressions discussion start off with such a nice, thoughtful, and "deep" impressions comment (from you).

Your complex impressions were very interesting to read. Thanks for taking the time to express them and your several "takes" on communicating that mix of feelings (impressions). I truly enjoyed reading each line and "followed" you throughout.

You really did bring up several interesting points. Deep ones too. "Existential" and "extrospection" were some key concepts.

I think I understand just what you mean too.

When I sit down at my own piano, I am often in a "mood" where the creation of a new way of musical expression (an improvisation in music) is part of the challenge and at the same time the real "reward" for me. When I can take a musical expression (improvisation) to a new direction, sometimes with forethought, sometimes with just "letting it flow" I get great enjoyment from that stream of conscious and unconscious creativity. I suppose that is the sense of "wonderment" you mentioned above.

For a "concert pianist" the "expression" may be more limited as they are following a classical music score with fewer possibilities for "creation" but they sure do seem to enjoy the challenges and the "performance" and connections with the music.

Thanks again for taking the time to add such a deep and well written Impressions statement. I am sure I will enjoy reading it several times and I will share your Impression with the pianist too! I am sure she will also enjoy your Impressions and I anticipate she will agree or "confirm" your feelings too. That is a nice contribution to this thread and it does help me look at the image from another POV and with the depth you shared.

Good light to you.

To the Black & White Forum:

Impressions comments are sometimes "deep" and detailed as seen above. But, some are short too. Both can be enlightening and fun to write or read.

So, don't feel intimidated or feel that a long or detailed Impression comment is required or necessary.

But....if you feel inclined to "let it flow" or you feel "poetic" then "GO FOR IT!"

Sometimes an image can be a great "creative spark" that ignites a new way of thinking.

And...that can be a big "positive" for YOUR own photography too.

The key point is to just state your own response to the figure/subject/image from a "sense" you get from the image.

p.1 #5 · Your Impression #58 Nocturne

Steadman, Thank you for the kind words. As I stated above, your work invokes some deep thought process sometimes and this thread certainly did. As a fellow musician (electric bass for 45years), the Impression#58 really hit home.
You and your subject are surely aware that music improvisation involves a response related, sometimes directly, to the immediate environment. A sort of "invention cycle" if you will permit me.The invention of new thought patterns, new musical structures , new symbols or new ways to present a work. Albeit music or photography, and in our case, both. Personal awareness can be brought into a moment of intuition. Hence in music, most predominately in Jazz, "fusion". Skills are brought and techniques of improvisation are not solely related to music. They can meld into life. Almost "zen like."
This wonderful woman and pianist could be playing a highly structured piece when wham...heh I can change a chord here, bar there and enhance this composition to meet a place in my creative mind where I might want to pursue.
Her eyes convey that to me. Her hands are rightlfully conveying a dynamic, a texture...
This allows her, and yourself, a range of options that best fit a given situation. This could be a reoccurring or never experienced situation. Her eyes can and do convey that. Sorry I can't hear, audibaly(spelling?) what she is playing.
Darn!!

Your above statement is very well taken. I hope my response doesn'y solicit non comments.
Regards!
Dan

Hi Dan,

What a nice impressionist you are!

That was a very interesting impression comment you wrote above. I know what you mean about the response and the invention of improvisation. Fun stuff. You wrote it so well. Spoken by a true musician!

I am sure the pianist (woman) will get a "kick" (or lift) out of reading your comments (and compliments to her).

I enjoyed reading your impression and am very glad the image moved you to feel as you do or that it connected with those feelings you have.
