Just the other day, without warning, my 5D started acting up.
When I flip the switch to turn it on, it doesn't turn on right away. Then, when it does come on, it says that my CF card isn't formatted and will REFUSE to shoot any images. The thing is, my CF card is FINE -- I just used it the other day. Just to be sure, I tried all of my CF cards and it says the same damn thing with every single one.
What's worse, if I try to format any one of the CF cards, my 5D says that they can't be formatted. So, basically I can't used my 5d at all now!
This royally sucks. Can anyone shed any light on this?
Might be a simple software glitch. Try pulling the main battery, and the memory battery, the little watch battery, and letting the camera sit for a bit. If that does not fix it, it is probably time to call Canon Service.
First remove BOTH batteries for 12 hours or so. Reinstall batteries, this should fix your problem. Your other issue could be a bent CF pin, you should be able to see this problem.
Hey guys thanks so much for getting back to me. I already checked the CF pins, and they're fine. I'm ready to try your battery removal solution, but I'm afraid I don't know where this second battery is. Can you elaborate?
Also, my firmware isn't up to date. Do you think updating it might solve my issue?
The button battery is accessed by the base of the camera, it should be near the tripod hole, you should be able to open it with a quarter / nickel (be sure to observe the battery orientation ).

Thanks again.
I don't remember a firmware update to deal with this problem. But, running the latest firmware is usually a good idea.

12 hours
A couple of seconds should be more than enough if both batteries are removed. What would help is switching the camera on for a second when the batteries are removed. This will help drain the left-over power in the capacitors.

Guys, sorry to be a pain, but I still can't figure out where this other battery is accessed from. I'm looking at the base of my camera, and I don't see anything that could be opened with a coin. All I can see are tiny phillips screws. Am I supposed to remove those?
Well, I put the batteries back in and no dice. I even went out and bought a new memory battery since theyr'e only like $4, but that didn't make any difference.
I'm going to update the firmware now and hope that helps, but I'm not optimistic.
Is there anything else I can try, or am I screwed? I really, really don't want to have to send it into Canon.
God dammit, the stupid camera won't even LET me update the firmware. The problem is that it won't recognize ANY CF card. Because it thinks the cards aren't formatted, even when they are, it doesn't see the new firmware file that's sitting on the card. The worst part is, even if I try to format a CF card in the camera, it says that it "can not format".
So, I have a camera that absolutely WILL NOT accept any CF card, nor will it format any CF card. Thus, I can't do a damn thin, not even update firmware.
Bloody fu**ing HELL this sucks!
Is there anything else I can try guys? Or, do I have to resort to sending it in to Canon and not seeing it again till sometime in January?
I know the others have joked a bit about leaving the batteries out for 12 hours but I do remember that being a fix for another problem. I don't remember exactly what. You'll know its been long enough if you have to set the clock. Also, just for grins try setting everything to the factory defaults and removing any custom settings even though removing the batteries should accomplish that.
Ok, I'll try and leave the batteries out for a full 12 hours. And, I already removed all custom functions yesterday.
Thanks for all your efforts. If, by some miracle, the 12 hour thing fixes it, I'll post it here. Otherwise, I'll be sending the goddamn thing into Canon tomorrow. @*#%^$*#%W!!!!!!!!!!! lol
Someone mentioned earlier to look at the pins to see if they are bent, can you get a penlight and check on that? Sometimes, getting them bent back can be done if you are comfortable with that. That isn't highly recommended if that is the case.
