p.1 #1 · Multiple Bodies: Question primarily for sports photographers..
Hi all,
I typed out a long, detailed question about how many bodies a sports photographer (football, hockey, whatnot) should use, but instead of filling four paragraphs with musings, I'll ask...
As a sports or other type of freelance/for fun/whatever photographer, do you use two bodies with different length lenses? If so, what do you shoot and what is the combo. If not, why not?
There, I saved you one minute of reading that I now have copy and pasted in case it becomes relevant.
p.1 #4 · Multiple Bodies: Question primarily for sports photographers..
2 1-series bodies. One with a 300/2.8 (with 1.4x if daylight) and the second with 70-200/2.8. Occasionally a third body, 5D, with a wider lens (fisheye or 24-70). This would be a football setup. For soccer, just the first two. Basketball, same two. Volleyball, a 200/1.8 and 85/1.8 on the 1-series bodies. Gymnastics, it'd be two bodies with several lenses--200/1.8, 85/1.8, 85/1.2, 50/1.4 and 35/1.4.
p.1 #5 · Multiple Bodies: Question primarily for sports photographers..
Almost always two, when shooting field sports like Football, Baseball, or Soccer a 70-200/2.8 and 400/2.8. Sometimes with High School Baseball an Softball I'll use a 300 instead of the 400.When I shoot H.S. Basketball or Volleyball I usually only use one body with a 70-200/2.8 or a 85/1.8. Most of the Basketball I'm strobing one end of the court. With Volleyball I don't always get the option of strobes.

Indoor - Basketball/Volleyball: I've settled on 2 1-series bodies, 1 with a 300/2.8 the other with an 85/1.8. I'll also bring a fish and/or a wide zoom for timeout shots.
Outdoor: Football/Soccer/Baseball: Will be a 400/2.8 and a 70-200 (and a 1.4 for either lens in daylight). Again, I'll have a fish and a wide zoom.
p.1 #8 · Multiple Bodies: Question primarily for sports photographers..
For basketball I have a 1D3 with a 70-200 2.8 and a 5D with a 24-70.
For swimming I have a 1D3 with 70-200 2.8 and a 5D with a 20-35.
For cross country I have a 1D3 with a 300 2.8 and a 5D with a 24-70
For non-sports events (PJ stuff) I'll have my 1D3 with a 50 1.2 and my 5D with a 35 1.4
p.1 #9 · Multiple Bodies: Question primarily for sports photographers..
For rugby, I use two 1DII bodies with 70-200/2.8L IS on one and 300/4L IS or a Mamiya M645 manual focus 300/2.8 APO on the other, depending on how much light is available. I also usually have a 5D with 24-70L and a 580EX in my backpack.
