p.1 #1 · My progress...

FM has been a big part of my journey. So I wanted to show my appreciation by showing my progress.

I started about three years ago when my son was about 1 year. He was the only reason I started taking pictures.

Just like many here, I started collecting gears and obsessing about lens sharpness. It's all about fast glass, L glass or prime to achieve maximum sharpness. I mostly hung out at the Canon forum or Buy and Sell forum. I can type the Canon board or Buy and Sell board's URL in my sleep ... http://fredmiranda/forum/board/2 for Canon and The Buy and Sell forum is forum no.10 -- so it will be http://fredmiranda/forum/board/10

Anyways, these pictures were basically it. I took it with the widest aperture and the longest lens I had. I love these pictures, because of three things: the subject is my son, the moment was right and the bokeh. But again, I think it's more of the lens doing its job than my skill.

One thing I have been learning recently and getting a better understanding is: photography is about light. One has to know how to read the light. Some of you have said this long ago. But I guess I have to experience it to believe it.

So I have gone from fully using natural light to using the best light possible. I learn how to use my flash. So here are some I took with flash using shoot-trough umbrella, tell me what do you think.

Hi,

Reading your comments, I believe you are on the right track to progress...and enjoying photography more.

One bit about which I don't fully agree: I prefer natural light over flash.

It is good to know how to use both as one or the other may not be available when you need it or the right photo opportunity presents itself.

Good luck on your travels. My advice: "Follow your own muse."

Second bit of advice for a proud papa: Get in the picture with your son.

Yes Steady, I didn't mean to say I prefer flash over natural light. Whichever best for the situation is what I prefer. And IMHO, reading lights' attributes is the key, whether it's natural light or flash.

Thanks for sharing. I can relate so much to your journey. I think you're on the right track when it comes to finding/creating the best possible light. If it's all natural, wonderful! If it's a combination of ambient and strobe, that's wonderful as well! These pictures you've shown are great examples of your progress!
