p.1 #1 · Smart media card the same like SD card ?

Hi
Im about to get this old old old Oly digicam that uses Smart Media card, just for fun for my 4 yr old son.
From my limited research, it is no longer in production (Smart Media card), but still can be purchased online.
Im not familiar at all with this media, never even seen the real one.
But from the looks, it looks so similar like the SD card, can i substitute it with SD card ?
Thx

One word NO.
It may look the same shape as SD but its much bigger.
Cant remember fully as its a while since I had one in my hand but I think it was made of a card type material (not like the hard plastic you get now) and was physicly bigger but thinner than Compact flash cards.

My advice get a different cam that eitehr takes CF or SD as it will work out cheaper than trying to get the smart media memory.

I agree with the first answer. Stay away from SmartMedia. Coincidentally, I just gave away a couple of those cards.........

SM is obsolete and only went up to 128MB.

you'll end up spending more on a smartmedia memory card and a card reader (or a cable) then you will on the camera. Cost-wise, smartmedia costs a lot more than more current forms of memory cards (SD, compactflash) because it is no longer made. A 128mb card goes for over $30 on ebay, while you can probably get a 2gb SD or compactflash card for the same amount (that's 16x as much storage). That said, my second camera was an old olympus that took smartmedia cards, and though I haven't touched it in many years I think it still works just fine. For a four year old, you probably can't go wrong, but I'd expect him to grow out of it pretty quickly and you'll want to move on to something a bit more current/upgradeable.

Lots of the multiple format readers, built-in readers, etc., still take the SmartMedia so you may already have what you need to read it. Depending on what you find and how you set up the camera, I doubt he's going to fill it up that often. He's 4. He'll tire of it before he outgrows it.

I've just taken a 128 mb SM card out of my old Fuji S602. Apparently I put it away with out removing the batteries and can't get the battery door open now - it's gunked shut. If interested, drop me a PM with an address and I'll mail it to you.

How many 4 year olds will care whether it has a 128MB card or a 4 gig card?

It's my guess the kid will take pictures whether the camera has a card in it or not.

I think its not because they dont care about the cards size, its because they dont know about it yet, as soon as they cant take pics anymore due to card full, and you told them that, they starts to reason that they need something bigger.

It's my guess the kid will take pictures whether the camera has a card in it or not.

4 yrs old actually smart enough, they want to view the pics they took and show it to people. Maybe because they picked it up from their experience, when I took a pics of him, I usually shows him the pics, so they kinda know that after pics being taken, they can see it.
