p.1 #1 · Variations on a Fallsy Path

Ok, so in the previous post (Fallsy Folksy), some folks wondered what the image would look like without the people in it. This is not the same shot, but in the same area. They are variations, just to play. The other shot is better in my estimation. It has more visual interest, and darker regions. Then again, I do like the BW version here. What do you think?

1) Basic version (I'd be tempted to just leave it like this, or perhaps add a bit darker vignette, but not by much)

2) A version with contrast fixed a bit so as to reduce the warmish color cast of #1

3) A version that peddles the sepia tone and desaturates

4) Finally, a BW version with heavy darkening, meant to create a tunnel-like view

Any thoughts greatly appreciated. At this point I'm just playing. This is, in my estimation, not the best image, and so I am inclined to the last version (#4) because it is more visually compelling.

Best,

N

The bright spot in the extreme ULC is very distracting. I'd clone or crop that out. I'd also probably crop down from the top a bit. Otherwise, a little hard to pick a favorite. The last is just too dark for me; it would work better with much heavier cropping.

I'm surprised at how much impact this loses without the people in the frame. This might make an awesome base layer for a photoshop contest

The people were definitely an integral part of the image. Of these, I prefer the 1st by quite a bit. #2 loses the special feeling, #3 looks odd, #4 is too dark, but for me, #1 is just right

Much prefer the 1st one! It looks like a path I'd want to take. The others become progressively less so.

Oh, thank you much folks. Lee, that's precisely the case. You put it succintly. Which is why this series will become an early exercise for my students to discern the emotive power of particular visual elements. Thanks again.

I have to agree that I prefer the previous shot with the people in it. : )

Best,

I like 2 and 3 the most but would crop the first bit of road out. The dip in the road creates a line and for me that stops the flow of the lead in line quite a bit.

Ok, the people do add a nice element, but I really like these, especially the 2nd and 3rd. The moods are really spooky and very appealing.
I agree about the upper left corner bright area, and Ute's idea to crop the bottom part of the path, as well.
Sweet stuff, regardless!

Hey Nacho,

I like #2 quite a bit. Your B&W #4 is really cool with the darker area's, but I would lighten up the lower right to show just a bit more of the path.

I do agree about the impact of the people.

And I do agree that you just need to darken totally (like make it black) the upper left hand corner, it's toooooooooo bright.

A vote for #1, and that last one is scary!
