That's pretty hard to miss. I've experienced what I thought was sensor flare (but many readers were'nt convinced), and it was very different from this concentrated and brightly-fringed bright spot.
Wow, that's intense. I've had my fair share of flare from my 12-24, but I've never seen anything like that! The sun must have hit yours just right (wrong) to produce it.
I get to see quite a bit of flare with wide lenses on my IR 20D, but rarely that intense and never saw one in that area of a picture. Almost, looks like light was able to sneak through an opening somewhere and hit the sensor, like a loose back on a film camera.
Don't know, that IS a heck of a flare spot.

Anyone else notice a slight purple discoloration near the edge of the "flare"? almost like it's sensor bloom or something. Hope it's not the sensor crapping out.
I never saw the flare in the VF, so it must have been some reflection between the sensor and lens element(s), and AFAIK, simply a one-time occurrence. The sun wasn't even in the frame, but must have been right on the edge of the lens' FOV.
Sorry to bump an old thread, but I've seen this exact flare with my Sigma when the sun is just on the edge of the FOV. Freaked me out at first, but I've seen it on both bottom corners of the frame in different shots. It's just a characteristic of that damn bulbous front element, I think.
