p.1 #1 · Wicked flare from Sigma 12-24/5D

I've been using this Sigma 12-24 for maybe a year and a half and I've never seen even the slightest hint of flare, but today I got this surprise:

Anyone seen flare of this magnitude with this lens/body combination (no filter was in place, BTW)? All the rest of today's shots looked normal.

That's pretty hard to miss. I've experienced what I thought was sensor flare (but many readers were'nt convinced), and it was very different from this concentrated and brightly-fringed bright spot.

Wow, that's intense. I've had my fair share of flare from my 12-24, but I've never seen anything like that! The sun must have hit yours just right (wrong) to produce it.

I get to see quite a bit of flare with wide lenses on my IR 20D, but rarely that intense and never saw one in that area of a picture. Almost, looks like light was able to sneak through an opening somewhere and hit the sensor, like a loose back on a film camera.
Don't know, that IS a heck of a flare spot.

Anyone else notice a slight purple discoloration near the edge of the "flare"? almost like it's sensor bloom or something. Hope it's not the sensor crapping out.

Thankfully the rest of the shots were okay, but man that looks like the fury of a thousand hells rolled up on your sensor.

Hopefully it didn't damage the camera at all.

Here's a crop of the flare:

And the next shot:

I never saw the flare in the VF, so it must have been some reflection between the sensor and lens element(s), and AFAIK, simply a one-time occurrence. The sun wasn't even in the frame, but must have been right on the edge of the lens' FOV.

It looks like you were pointing the lens up, so it must've caught it "just right". Weird that the next shot was fine.

I get flare from this lens ALL the time. That's when I break out my "left handed lens shade", aka my left hand!

I may have been lucky to never see any flare in my 12-24/5D shots before, so I guess I'll be more mindful of the potential in the future.

Sigma 12-24 is prone to flare due to its much curved front element.

I had this issue. It's "ok" for Sigma 12-24

Sorry to bump an old thread, but I've seen this exact flare with my Sigma when the sun is just on the edge of the FOV. Freaked me out at first, but I've seen it on both bottom corners of the frame in different shots. It's just a characteristic of that damn bulbous front element, I think.
