OK, I admit it, I'm anal and don't want the feet of my tripod to get muddy/snowy/wet/etc. when I'm using it outside in inclement weather. I currently have cut the fingers out of some regular household cleaning gloves, but frankly, the yellow is pretty wierd looking.

For those of you that feel the same way I do, and have found a solution, would you mind sharing it? For those of you who think I'm nuts and don't see the need for such an item, feel free to have a good laugh on me

Maybe you can find some cane tips that fit. Drugstores have them.

I think the feet are designed to get wet, snowy and even, heaven forbid, muddy. And this would give you the opportunity to lovingly caress the feet, then gently wiping them dry. Why then you could perhaps take them to bed.

That was my thought - condoms.

Gitzo has feet that have a spike and a removable cover (rubber). they are designed to get wet, snowy and muddy.

and if you create a "bootie" that slips you kinda defeat the purpose of the bottom. that is a good nonslip grip.

Oh God, I haven't laughed so much in a long time. I never thought of condoms, what a sight that would be! And, taking it to bed? My husband might strenuously object to THAT.

OK, maybe it's NOT such a good idea, and I just need to come to terms with the fact that they're gonna get "dirty" (such a dirty word).

Actually, it's not that weird a question. If my Dynatrans ever suddenly appreciated in price to the level of a Gitzo, you can be sure I would be taking far better care of them. Cane/crutch tips are certainly a valid suggestion.

My Dynatrans came with combination rubber/stainless steel tips, and I've never really given it any thought. Maybe I should be. I live in the shadows of steel mills, oil refineries, chemical plants and coking plants. I once saw the ground burning, and there were no plants to sustain it. Yeah, I think I will pay more attention from now on.

Any thread that can combine tripod and condoms and make it work....well I just cant stop laughing....

But Runamuck is also right...so Jo this is what you can do....I would go to your local golf shop and they make compact golf ball cleaners...they have a brush and cleaning solution built in....if it gets dirty you clean it then dry it off...(Ok I am anal too..!!! And carry one in my car in the bag that holds my tripod..

)

I still can't stop laughing though....!!!!

Wow I need a cigar after that one and I don't even smoke...

Maybe my sense of humor went south with the warm weather, but I don't think it''s that funny. Far weirder was the thread that included monopods and vaginal suppositories for yeast infections. Probably the first (and last) time yeast infections were part of a discussion on FM. Google monistat and monostat for a clue.

Jo,I take the old, outdated electrical rubber gloves used by power companies and line companies, cut off the thumbs and they stretch around the feet on all my tripods. The rubber is extra heavy and thick and very pliable. I then secure the top part with a plastic "wire tie" and all foreign substances are kept out.

Check out drypods at birdsasart.com -the deluxe has a little sleeve that slips over the tip and then you have waterproof sleeve. I know they are more for water but maybe they would work for you. I think you have to call to order.

Hehe, I think asking for any form of "tripod protection" is a very valid question, especially considering the abuse some tripods go through (I have some pictures of almost-submerged tripods).

I'd advice against condoms though, since they'll probably cause more harm (you know, with lube and all)

If you put teflon tape on the threads of the tripod feet you need not worry about water and grit getting inside the tripod's leg tubing. A quick rinse in the hose of the laundry tub cleans the mud and etc away with no fuss. Just wipe them dry.

If you are really anal you would use a rectal syringe as your lens and sensor blower.

Isn't the use of a condom like wearing a sock over your big lens?

I think you underestimate the rugedness of a Gitzo tripod. I have had mine buried a foot deep in beach sand, washed it off with salt water from the ocean, then with bathwater a few hours later and the thing works flawlessly. I have never had the need to even take it apart to do any maintinence after many trips to muddy/sandy lake shores. It's a tool to be used, not something that you should worry about so much you might compromise the quality of a photograph.

Although I must admit when I first got the tripod I was pretty anal about keeping it clean too.

I'm glad I could contribute to such a spirited thread, and some of the suggestions above indicate that I'm not the ONLY one who likes a clean tripod. Thanks for the suggestions and the laughs! And, by the way, I work in a hospital, so I actually could try the rectal syringe in place of my rocket blower, I'll let you'all know how it works out

Keeping muck and grit out of the sliding leg joints makes sense. You could make your own dry-pod type of thing. Get some PVC tubing at Home Depot and glue a cap on the end.

I don't use a tripod much, but since much of my work is done in pastures, I would assume that my monopod has either cow or sheep s--t on the bottom, I haven't really looked.
