p.1 #1 · de-curl, spray, storage: final prints

de-curling... I'm moving up to an epson 7880, and will be printing off a 24in roll for much of my work (harman glossy). Is the d-roller really worth $260? Or has anyone had luck in making their own device to do this for a lot less money?

Removing dust... any special methods you suggest for removing dust before and after printing? How do you let your prints air out before spraying and storing them (ie. any special yet simple anti dust measures?).

Spraying... I've used the PremierArt print shield spray in the past, and was happy with the results. Any reason I should try one of the other offerings?

Storage... How do you store 24x36in prints? I can't find a box that big.. doesn't need to be fancy, I just need somewhere to keep the prints on file! Preferably archival stuff of course.

Thanks!

I have the d-roller. It works very well. It does seem pricey.

There were a couple of threads over on LL forum which included some thoughts on building your own, using a window blind etc. See what you think

and here is a link to a LL poster .pdf file with very detailed plans (including pictures) of how to build one he feels is as good as the $260 one.

Save one of the paper rolls with a few feet of paper left and use that. Works great for me for my 17" 4000. There's no magic there, you just need to be able wrap the print with another sheet around the roller for a few minutes to reverse the curl. Or ... you could spend $260 and get the real thing :-)

I used to do something like that. Works pretty well ... sort of. The d-roller allows you to reverse roll around a 1" core easily without danger of bending the print. Because it is so tight a few seconds and the print lays completely flat. Using a larger diameter roller requires more time and usually leaves a slight curl at the edge.

Possible down side to the d-roller with that small of a diameter is I'm not sure if some of the new stiff papers can handle that tight of a curl, such as Ilfords Galerie Gold Fiber Silk, so your method may actually be better than a d-roller for them. It lays pretty flat anyway without decurling. I've got a few prints on this paper with a little curl at each end, but they're too big for my d-roller.

Good point.. my paper is 320 GSM 12.8mil... even thicker than the Ilford Trouble is, I have to print an entire roll before I get to have the end of the roll to try that method... maybe I can find a used up roll somewhere...
