p.1 #1 · FAQ For Canon to Nikon | |
Seems there is some small demand for a Canon to Nikon FAQ. So I am starting this thread. I will put in the questions that I have seen pop up multiple times, and answer them to the best of my ability. I am sure that someone will fix up my answers as appropriate
1. Why is Nikon called the "dark side"?
I don't know. The lenses are nice and black, so that you don't stand out in the crowd
2. What lens will work on my new Nikon?
Short answer, all of them will mount. Any Nikon F-mount lens will mount on a modern day DSLR. Please note that you should not mount pre-AI F-mount lenses on modern bodies (D40 is an exception).
Long answer, it depends on which camera you have as to the functionality you get depending on lens.
- On D40/D40x/D60 you will not get autofocus with non-AFS or non-AFI lenses. This means lenses that have screwdriver mount (AFD/AF) lenses will not AF. All AF lenses will meter.
- On all other camera bodies, AF lenses will AF and meter properly.
- If you have a AI/AIS lens (manual focus only!) then you can mount it on any camera, and it will meter with the following camera bodes: D1 series bodies, D2 series bodies, D200, D300, D700, D3.
- If you have a AI/AIS lens, with the exception of D1 series bodies, you can input the non-CPU lens data into the camera so that the f-stop and lens info appear correctly in the EXIF. Note that regardless of what you enter, the camera WILL meter correctly in ambient light instances (ie if you have info in there for a 35 f/1.4 but you put on a 28 f/2.8, the camera will meter correctly for your set aperture even though the EXIF will be wrong). If you have incorrect lens data for the lens (on a camera that supports metering with non-CPU lenses) flash metering will not work correctly as it requires correct aperture info to meter correctly.
- AI-P lenses work like screwdriver AF lenses on the D40 series (metering, no AF) and meter on all bodies.
- "D" versus non-"D" lenses: D means distance information is sent to the camera, seems to only affect flash shooting. Note that there are AF lenses that are non-D.
The D1/D2/D3 bodies turn the screwdriver lenses the fastest (personal experience says D1 series AF the fastest out of those).
3. My new Nikon shows number of shots on top LCD, how do I turn it off?
You can't. This is a feature.
4. How do I make my new Nikon go into auto-shut off?
You can't. The camera's meter will time out after a set number of seconds (selectable in the menu). This mode is very low power consumption, so it is not a problem. If you hit the shutter or AF buttons, the camera will spring back to life, ready to shoot.
Its a tiny 1bit display that takes virtually no battery power from the battery. Think of a digital watch, it has 10 times the information, and the battery lasts for years and years, and those batteries are only 1/15th the mAh.
5. Is the AFON button the same as the * button?
It's close. You can separate out the AF function onto the AFON button just like the * button. However, the VR function will only activate on shutter half-press.
6. I have heard you can use the electronic rangefinder to help focus manual focus lenses?
Yes, this is true. Simply put the focus point on the object you want help to focus (be aware that you need sufficient contrast on your object), then press the AF-ON button, or half-press the shutter button. Look in the viewfinder, in the lower left corner, you will see a green dot light up when the object is in focus. Note that this works on ALL Nikon DSLRs. The pro bodies actually have arrows that tell you which way to turn the focus ring in order to achieve correct focus.
7. Which are the lens replacements for my Canon setup?
? ---> Nikon 14-24 f/2.8
Canon 16-35 --> Nikon 17-35 f/2.8
Canon 24-70L --> Nikon 24-70 f/2.8 (28-70 and 35-70 are also contenders depending on your finances)
Canon 70-200IS ---> Nikon 70-200VR or AFS 80-200 f/2.8
Canon 35L --> No real equivalent, but older AIS 35 f/1.4 is nice. AFD 35 f/2 is closest match these days
Canon 85L --> Nikon 85 f/1.4 Nikon has a different rendition and faster focus
Canon 70-200 f/4 ---> No exact equivalent, but the 70-300VR is very good
8. My lens is an autofocus lens and has an aperture ring and I can't get it to work, help?!?
Check to see that you have the lens set to its smallest aperture and locked in place with the tab. If not, you can always use the aperture ring, just go to Manual exposure mode. You need to have the lens set to its smallest aperture in order for the camera to have electronic aperture control (the ability to select aperture from the camera).
9. Is EF-S like DX?
No, EF-S is a smaller mount, whereas DX is the same F-mount, just with a smaller image projection. A DX lens projects about 44% of the image as compared to a FX (or film) lens. The DX lens will work on your FX camera, if you want to use it, just be prepared for vignetting (in FX mode) or 44% less MPs (in DX mode).
10. What is "ED"?
A glass developed and trademarked by Nikon Corporation, used in telephoto lenses to obtain optimum correction to help prevent chromatic aberration, improving sharpness. These lenses are resistant to temperature changes, preventing focus shift problems in lenses that use calcium fluorite crystal elements.
This is similar to UD + flourite elements that Canon uses to achieve similar results. You will find there are a lot consumer glass even that has ED elements these days, which is a good thing for us consumers
11. What is the equivalent of USM?
This is AF-S (Silent Wave Motor).
Well, that's all I can think of now.
Cheers!
