The BEST short zoom on a 1.6 crop is undeniably the EF-S 17-55IS. It's just stupidly expensive, not well enough made, can in some examples attract dust and doesn't even come with a lens hood.

If you have the money and won't want to go 1.3 crop or full frame, it's the best, but personally I think a Tamron 17-50 is just as good (bar the IS) and one third the price.

The first three lenses you mentioned are only PAR or somewhat below PAR in terms of IQ and BUILD...

For the Ultimate ALL purpose General Lens buy the Canon 24-70mm f2.8 L, once you have it that's it...

got no money burn?----> here are the alternates... by order:

1. Canon 17-55 f2.8
2. Tamron 28-75 f2.8
3. Tamron 17-50 f2.8

since you are in KSA were dusts are almost everyday.... I'd suggest you buy the 24-70 it has weather sealing...

The two Ls that you have are all good... cheap and sharp!!!

Buy the 28-135 kit and sell the lens. It is only 200 bucks more than the body only and you can sell the lens for at least 300. So you're 100 ahead.

you are right about dusty waether here, but now is so great after heavy rains recently.

well, I will re-think about whole issue, maybe sell 17-40 and add for 24-70 ..

since I know what L lens means

but worry about bad copies, I read many stories about this.

by the way bro.. Friends of mine told me you cannot take any pictures there in Saudi... only the ones inside a private house only or a private compound.... is this true?

Well, If you explore flickr with "saudi" and "saudi arabia" tags, you will find amazing results from everywhere in Saudi cities and regions.

As in most countries, the photography is banned near senstive areas.
