What is the maximum number of continuous shots can anyone get with the 40D? I get about 18. Does the card matter? I wouldn't think so, as they are all faster than 1x.
If you're shooting JPEG, check your custom functions for "high ISO noise reduction" - if that's on it seriously damages the burst, even at ISO100, alternatively if you're shooting RAW, 18 is pretty good considering the amount of data being shifted around (c.14mb/frame x 6.3 fps)
The card does matter. For example, my 30D can write slightly faster than a Sandisk Ultra II, but nowhere near as fast as a Sandisk Extreme III. Therefore, I buy the Extreme III at £17 for a 4 GB. Anything faster will make no difference in the camera - only when using a fast card reader. The camera specs and card specs should quote data write speeds in Mbits/second.
I have a transcend 8gb 133x write speed. I get 75 shots on Jpeg, full quality. ISO 400. I get 16 RAW.
And the card does matter, if there was any doubt. The write speed will affect it. if its like 10x then you will not get anywhere near as many as the 300x they have now. In my opinion 133x is plenty for what I shoot atleast, unless I am shooting raw, then it's a little slow but not too slow.
After posting, I tested my 40D set to jpeg and using a Hitachi 4g microdrive. I got 79 continuous and it only slowed, not stopped (still firing intermittently). I don't use speed shooting, but good to know. Impressive in my opinion.
I can get over 60 shots in jpeg with my 30D and 40D, and I only stopped, just to prevent further useless shutter cycles.
It happened, BECAUSE I left the high iso noise reduction on, and forgot (on my 40D).
A golfer at work wanted me to take photos of his whole golf swing, to see if there were any small tweaks to work out. My 40D even in small jpeg (why would he need raw to review just the lcd for a problem) got like 6 shots. I freaked, and tried out my 30D, which didn't seem to quit at all.
Wondered what was going on, and realized it was high iso NR.

40D isn't enough to get a good golf swing, though.
I love my Transcend 4gb 266x cards. Cheap, lifetime warranty, and faster than I need.
It did what it needed to do He needed to know if there was one little tweak he needed to make, and a seasoned semi-pro was able to find out from my 40D shots that his backswing needed work.
