p.1 #1 · the other side of tourism

Raffles Le Royale is where Jacquie Kennedy stayed in Phnom Penh all those years ago before the Kmher Rouge and Pol Pot and the house "handy to transport" is where the beverage manager lives!

Although the building in the 2nd shot is very nice, the one in the 1st shot is by far more interesting. That little house is almost on the tracks it must shake, rattle and roll with every passing train. An amazing contrast between the 2, talk about how the"other Half lives". Also interesting are the metal railway ties, is that common there? So used to the timber ones that are standard here.

By the looks of the rust on the rail and the growing vegetation, looks like that railway is in disuse.

What do you mean by the "beverage manager" Tim? I also see that high roof in the first image, I'm guessing that house by the railway is very close to the luxurious hotel?

Your right about the rail line. pretty undercut by rain and lack of maintenance.
No where near le Royale. Quite a way north of the friendship bridge.. Beverage manager? well he is the senior barman and maitre d of the Elephant Bar or was when I was there

Luckily for them that track isnt used. The only line in use when I was last there was the one down to Kampot. The Mekong / Ton Le Sap is the main transport link for freight.
The other half? These people have good jobs and are relatively well off. I posted shot of the poorest of the poor and where they live some time ago. Lots of views but not one comment.
thanks for looking
