p.1 #1 · First D200/D300 Comparison Shots

My D300 Arrived today. Haven’t done much with it, other than charge the battery, and set the date. I took my 70-200 VR, mounted it on a tripod, and took shots with both the D200 and the D300. I did my best to make sure settings in both cameras were alike, but this is still a quick and dirty non scientific test.

Apurture Priority in both cameras set at f/7.1
Multi-Pattern
WB 5600k in D200 5560k in D300. (Didn’t see a setting for 5600k in the D300)
Lens set at 200mm VR off
Auto Focus Single

These are 100% crops. Can you tell which is which?

I agree with stompq. Top one is D300 and bottom one is D200.

#1 looks better, but it could be either camera under these conditions.

Top on is the D300, almost all comparisons I've seen between the two the D200 renders a lower contrast than whatever camera it happens to be up against.

I think the middle one is the D200 image.

why do people do this with a new camera? the battery is about 1/4 charged out of the box. take some shots and charge later.

I am going to take a wild guess and say that the top one is from the D300. I base my selection on the fact that Nikon has improved considerably the exposure for highlights with the new cameras.

The top one is the D200, the bottom is the D300 - I'd know that mildly over-exposed metering anywhere!

i guess the top one is D200 as well, base on the metering behaviour only... my D300 has way more over-exposed shots than D200.

The top one is the D200. The D300 would have overexposed this one and probably clipped the red channel. Hope I'm wrong.

In the not overexposed area the second one looks sharper, so I think bottom is D300.
As the DOF is quite different could one of them be a little out of focus?
Looks like the second one is focused a little closer than the second one: closer details are sharper in the second one and further details are sharper in the first one.

Everything being equal (No PP) I'd say the bottom is the D200. D200 shots have always be a bit softer right out of the camera. The obvious lighter contrast and softer edge sharpness of the numbers on the bottom mailbox is may basis.

The second one looks slightly overexposed compared to the other one. Or it could be the JPG processing. Or it could be the first one is underexposed. Or it could be flare from a reflection which wasn't there on the first one. Or it could be that this really doesn't show anything and they could be from any camera.
