First attempt at some low key work. Shoot through umbrella strobe to the right 1/16th power, snooted strobe 1/4 power to the left to light the smoke. Originally planned for the soft light to be the main, but the snooted strobe has also made some specular highlights of the candle and the holder. More by luck than judgement, this has given the whole thing some good depth and contrast.
Very nice shot where the smoke, the last moving "alive" object is illuminated while the candle and bottom are darker.
I would have loved to see the candle more on the right side with the smoke leaving on the left (right side is empty), not sure if technically it was possible.
Thanks for your comment. Uncanny you should say that ... as soon as I posted it and was looking at it again, I came to exactly the same conclusion - it's funny how you can quite easily forget the basics of composition when concentrating on the effect you are trying to achieve.
Very good first attempt. I still haven't graduated to strobes yet but I often see the benefit of them from images on this site. Perhaps some p/p can alter the framing.
