I have a 17-40 L lens that has been inoperable for years because of err99. Wonder if this is a good second candidate?

Can i just say thank you to all the members that posted a reply with helpful advise.

ESP about the hammer banging technique. I used an adapted technique to my non-working lens its called the "bang on the table technique"

Basically,
I have a spare 80-200mm kit lens that did not work and kept giving me err99. The error occurs the moment i turn down the focal point.

So taking the advice from that thread... i banged it on a table... and it works now...

I thought it was a lost cause.

Once again thank you.

Very entertaining post.
When you look at the lens exploded like that, I figure that in it there is..

* $10 worth of rings and tubes.
* $20 worth of electronics.
* $40 worth of glass.
(Canon's cost)

Agreed. And is it just me, or is there a lot less glass in there than would be expected?

I love to take things apart and see how they are made and work. Now you've got me going but the only problem is all my lenses are working fine!

Really cool thread - thanks for sharing!

Now see? If Canon actually made these cups people would go crazy over them and buy them all up ... this would be a great gift for their CPS clients too

Same with the pen holder, I'm sure it wouldn't cost Canon much money for a static lens body with no electronics or glass in it, and not only would it generate profit, but it would be great advertising too

VERY cool post here, it was great to see the internals of a lens, I've stripped down a few lenses to the core before, so I was expecting there to be at least that many internal parts, but one thing I am always surprised by is the internal quality and attention to detail that they take with their EOS products

Sweet! Another resurrected thread! As the OP said, it's remarkable that all that fits in the lens!

Today, I noticed 2 rather large dust particles on the inside element of my 17-85mm lens. I wish I can remove it. Can you show us how you took apart your lens?
