p.1 #1 · Jeepers,creepers...

Where'd you get those peepers ?

Two flies with interesting eyes. First one is a flat-footed fly Platypezidae about 4mm long - these are the ones that like running around in circles on leaves at high speed. The second one is an autumnal soldier fly Sargus bipunctatus about 15mm body length - named after the two white spots on it's nose.

Very nice shots! Amazing eye-detail you get there on the Platypezidae.

Thanks Evyind - as you may have guessed- they all have some focus stacking for increased DOF.

Wonderful shots Brian, great detail, have seen a few of the soldier flies (or something very similar) but wasn't at all sure to their ID, think you have just solved that mystery for me!

incredible shots. Two insects with a lot of energy and mass devoted to sight. as always, all are great but the third and last stand out to me.

Nice work Brian capturing the Platypezidae, I've seen plenty of these but they never seem to sit still while I'm watching!

Another amazing series, Brian. I love the prismatic(is that a word) color effect in the second frame. Seriously good eye detail.

Thanks for the comments all
Not the most eye I've seen on a fly- that award goes to the guy below.

Kenny - the wings in #2 show interference colours - just like oil on water.

A worthy, award-winning critter, indeed! What's the use of these seemingly over-dimensioned sight-organs, one wonders

Thanks again for the comments. - think the fly in the added shot is the only time I've rubbed my eyes in disbelief when taking macros

Wow, those flies are like eyes with wings. Say... how much practice do I need to get slightly closer to the quality shown here? I got a feeling the answer is "A helluva lot!!".

Thanks Nobo

Difficult question to answer but, it's a mix of knowledge of your equipment and of the subjects you are trying to take so you have confidence in knowing how to take the shot and that something reasonable will come out the other end. The learning never stops as far as I can see.
