I don't think there is any physical difference. Normally we Canadians pay a higher price (when currencies are converted), but like you say the warrantee is longer. Purely marketing. They can blame the higher price on the warrantee knowing full well that the likelihood of having to cover the warrantee is minimal. Thus greater profit.
The serial numbers will let them know where the units were sold.
Offshore models to my knowledge fall under the same scenario. Again it is marketing and protecting their turf.
Why do you thing there are different DVD's in different countries... again ,marketing and protection.

No physical difference. If you have a USA camera you have to ship it back to Nikon USA for service. If you have gray market you're out of luck unless the vendors provide their own warranty (like B&H).

Regardless of where it is sold, and what warranty goes with it, or how much it is sold for, it's all made on the same production line, probably at the same time, to the same specification using the same parts. That's the nature of things. It's too expensive to set up multiple lines.
So, the USA has enjoyed significantly cheaper prices over the rest of the world for a long long time. Perhaps the price you pay is the warranty - although it seems to me that in the UK (and elsewhere in europe) we still get robbed something wicked.

You get much longer warranties on Nikon Canada products. 2 Years on Cams and 5 Years on lenses (vs 1 year each from the US). So it's definitely worth it to buy from Canada if you live there, even if the price is a little higher.

Had a couple long phone calls with both Nikon Canada and Nikon USA. The young women and the techs I spoke with, on both calls. were adament. Canada and USA are two different places.
USA products get serviced in the USA while Canadian products get serviced in Canada. Period.
I'm sure there are exceptions but that's the info I got.
Most of the equipment I've purchased has been from US sellers on ebay. Used of course. I was told to send it to the US for service. The Lady from the US sent me a CD with authorized dealers in the US. I've yet to look at it.
Never had to send a camera for repair but have sent many computers and parts to the US for repair. I've always labelled them as 'Warranty Repair' and have not have a problem with Canadian Customs.
I hope the same happens for any camera's or lenses that might need repair or work. I've not yet had to send any Nikon products for any servicing. Time will tell.
With this info from Nikon it's just a matter of sending it to the responsibile service centre.

What is it you are trying to buy anyway? I doubt you will find much difference in prices between Canada and USA once you factor in all the costs. Unless you are actually going there to pick it up. Even then the difference is minimal unless you smuggle it in to avoid paying taxes.
Example buy a D90 in the USA. $1000 USD plus local taxes (say 5%). $1050 USD converted to CDN is $1135. Plus GST on a portion of that amount when you cross the border (the portion that does not fit within your exemption).
So $1135 if you decide not to declare it.
You can order the same camera from a Canadian dealer and have it delivered to your door for for $1138 CDN in the case of the Camera store or $1150 in the case of McBain.

Lenses on the other hand, especially anything over about $5-600, can save you hundreds. for example the 14-24 is $1549 for as US model at B&H, but $1999CDN at Henry's in Canada (the closest Canada has to B&H). That's a big difference even after shipping and conbversion.

You can still find the 14-24 cheaper in Canada than B&H check this out
Buying it from B&H will cost you $1995.78 CDN to your door. Buying from Camera Store in Calgary will cost you $1900.45 CDN and you end up with a Canadian lens with full warranty.

Wow thanks for the links guys... those prices in AB are way better than any place that I have found in ON given the tax savings of 8% (PST in ON). Question is if any place in ON will do a price match to the bottomline price of those stores in AB.
