p.1 #1 · 32 bit laptop print on 64 bit Vista

Hi all -- I know this is a Photo forum but hopefully this tip will save time for people who have 32 Bit Windows (such as Win 2000, W2K3, or Win XP) on say a Laptop and want to connect to a remote printer attached to a 64 Bit VISTA machine

If you try the add new printer on the laptop and create a Network printer it won't work as 64 BIT VISTA won't load 32 bit printer drivers.

Here's a tip that should save people quite a lot of time. No registry hacks. All 100% standard windows.

1) on the REMOTE 64 Bit machine ensure the shared printer name HAS NO SPACES in it such as A2BIGPRINTER and ensure it's shareable.

2) on the 32 Bit client (i.e your laptop) go to the add new printer wizard and define a LOCAL printer.

3) define it to use a LOCAL PORT (create local port)

the port name should be \\REMOTESERVER\PRINTER

for example \\Studio1server\A2BIGPRINTER

Now add the 32 bit driver on your client machine (laptop etc)

Hey presto you can print on the remote printer

Cheers

-K

In this mode the Vista machine is basically acting as a simple router/gateway for the printer.

It's the same principal as what is offered on some smaller workgroup router/hubs and even NAS devices that have shareable USB printer ports.

This should actually be posted in the Post-Processing & Printing forum.
