p.2 #1 · 50D anyone?

I always skip at least one upgrade - much easier on the wallet. I went from the 20D to the 40D, so I'll wait for a 60D (or go to the 5DII at that time). Same with Photoshop, I went from PS7, to CS2, and soon to CS4. The only sequential upgrade I went for was Lightroom 1.x to 2.0 - only because LR 2 is just TOO COOL to pass up , and it was only $69 for the upgrade when pre-ordered with CS4.

I've ordered the 5DmkII. I will evaluate it first. I'm still open to upgrading my 40D to a 50D and staying on a crop camera.

I have a 30D and 5D. Didn't upgrade the 30 to the 40 because I just didn't see a compelling reason to. However, the 50D with it's higher megapixels, is compelling in that more megapixels allows more flexibility to crop, allowing me to use maybe not so long a tele lens and still be able to "pull" the subject forward via cropping (not sure if that makes sense, but it does to me).

Also, the micro adjustment on the 50D is a great feature. Live View? Maybe, not an item I see using a lot, but could come in handy.

I plan to keep the 5D for a while longer, I just got it less than 1 year ago and I'm very happy with it. I don't feel I've been limited in anyway by it yet, but I DO feel somewhat limited by the 30D.

I plan to buy the 50D, but only because I will be giving the 40D to my son when he heads to college this January. I am far more interested, however, in getting the 5D II.

Were it not for the fact that I am giving my son the 40D, I would probably take a wait and see approach.

No more 1.6x crop cameras for me, I´ve had it with crippled lenses due to the crop factor. I'm going to get the 5D Mark II as a backup instead.

May buy the 50D next year. I'll see what the Canon beta testers (customers) think of it in the next few months

If prices drop a little, the 5DII may come into the equation as well.

These cameras promise so much. Let's see what they actually deliver.

Jo, remember when you crop, you throw away lens resolution. The optical resolving power of the lens stays the same, no matter how many sensor MP there are.

Craig.

I don't see enough benefit in the 50D to justify an upgrade of my 40D.

10 to 15 megapixels is not too important for me, 10 is plenty and the comparison shot posted above shows that the benefits of the 50D are marginal and unlikely to be seen in real prints, even large prints.

I will wait for the 60D with video mode. I would have upgraded if the AF system was upgraded significantly, nearer to 1 series.

I own a 40D, and rbiefly tested it against 50D and 5D. 50D did give me better IQ than 40D, but the improvement is borderline as to whether it is worth my upgrading. So I pre-ordered a 5D2

My 40D has barely 2000 clicks on it. I anticipate to be getting another 2 years worth of use out of it. At that time, I may have to get another 1.6 crop camera, whatever is available.

Extra Mp is the last thing Canon can entice me with into buying the 50D. Ten Mp is plenty enough here.

I agree PetKal...I had a brief interest but my 40D is very very good...I might buy a 5dmk2 one year from now, but...between now and then the old model 5d might be selling of 1K or under, if so I'll buy that instead.

Just got my 40D about 6 weeks ago. I admit the LCD is lacking, but that's about my only regret. The AF is great, and the IQ is excellent. The ISO performance is way better than my 20D was. If I bought another body, I'd go more for a 5D than anything else...I've always been impressed with its IQ as well. As for the LCD advantage...you have to ask yourself if it's worth the upgrade costs. I don't believe the increased MP's is going to be that big of a deal by itself.

Sounds like a wonderful camera, but I have no need to upgrade at the moment.

I doubt I would get a 50D, Maybe if the priced dropped to a point where the 40D Was selling for a few months ago before the 50D Was announced. My next camera will be the 5D II.

I was thinking more of upgrading from the 40D to the D300. I just can't figure out why. Yet.

Not enough difference between the 40D and 50D. My 40D also does not have that many clicks on it and is working just fine. Like another poster, went from the 20D to the 40D and will wait for the 60D. However, if a friend of mine buys my 40D........

As a 30d driver, I am happy with its performance considering its price and where I am in my lens purchases.

I am interested in the micro-adjustment - and that's about all what I'v seen so far. I'm not interested in video and don't really need an improvment in megapixels. my 5D and 40D are just fine in that way.
I'm looking for better AF, high-ISO performance, dynamic range, 14 bit.

I wanted first the 5dII but 21 megapixel is just to much for my pc.
Since I own a 300 year old house that needs to be taken care of, my budget doesn't allow a 5dII AND a PC. Therfore I've taken a closer look at the 50d. but I love FF...

what's it gonna be? I don't know yet... Christmas is coming

At some point I will upgrade my 20D but until it gets heavier use it won't be anytime soon.

I have a 30D and a 40D.... will replace the 30D with a 50D. Actually, it will be delivered today.

Most say that the 30D and 40D have same IQ -- not my copy, though. The 40D is head and shoulders above the 30D -- even my wife sees the IQ difference between the two. I will definitely get a 5DII in the spring and probably keep all three.

why is switching to nikon always an option in these polls, instead of other rather reasonable options?

for example, here, it's either buy a 50D, don't buy a 50D, or switch to nikon...

before the switch-to-nikon option, what about buy another 40D, buy a 5DII etc...

=)

No way for me, if the body had an upgrade as in more AF points and spread out , I'd be on it in a second, but it's the same old 40D array. I would bet there is no difference in real world shooting compared to the 40D.

It doesn't say "switch to Nikon"... You fill in the blanks (...). But it looks like in your mind you have already done so

AFAIC, the only thing that the 50D has over the 40D is 5 extra megapixels. Here's what the difference looks like:

Hmmm..... If the point of this post was to show that IQ is very close, it did just the opposite for me. It looks like a marked improvement in resolution to me.

I'm not upgrading immediately, but will soon, from my 20D. Larger/better LCD and better viewfinder for the 50+ yo eyes, live view, and double the pixels for more cropping room. Slight increase in ISO noise also a plus.
