p.1 #1 · Academy of Art University BFA

I've decided to persue at least a BFA and have been looking at a few universities locally. I just not sure which way to go the Academy of Art University, http://www.academyart.edu/ , seems to have a program that is much more focused on photography vs. the local schools which require extras like sculpting, drawing, painting, etc, type courses. Has anyone gone to the Academy of Art or known anyone who has? Is it better the go with a local school or does it really matter?

Thanks,

I'm currently enrolled in the online program. I'm in the Navy and don't have the option to sit in a classroom. I love this school! The instructors are all working pros and the material is up to date. With any art degree you will have to take classes not focused on photography but not too many. If you are in SF and looking to stay local, I'd highly recommend it!

On the other hand, if you want to become a full time pro photographer, you may want to look at schools that also teach the business of photography as well. The Hallmark institute looks interesting and there is always Brooks in Santa Barbara.

I'm in the Air Force so the online aspect is a serious plus, and as far as the business side of things I was just going to take a few classes on the side using TA on base. I was just curious if the degree holds the same stature as one from a larger school. I'm a believer that a degree is a degree the only differance is the schools name on it.
I did the NYIP course and was seriously let down and didn't get much out of it. I'm glad the military paid for it & I didn't. MD is the i'm not sure if your familar with the NYIP course, but are the Art Academy's classes in depth and teach something other than the basics?

Don't know how serious you are about a BFA from a good school, but my daughter is getting a BFA and from different sources, we got many rankings of various sorts on BFAs.

On Photography in particular (not her major), this is about the best list out there from US News and World Report. A US News ranking is what each school shows off the most...when they can that is... Here is an example of where she is going: http://www.vcu.edu/arts/ For art schools in general, VCA Arts is the fourth best art school in country, and then various tracks within that are ranked too by USNews...as shown by VCU Arts using those numbers on thier website....just an example. I was REALLY lucky as VCU is in-state tution for us.

Also, this is a Graduate Program ranking but there is no Undergrad ranking out there so this is what the schools "art program" uses. Most major schools offer a BFA and an MFA in the various arts programs, including photography, but if your school of choice only had a BFA, they would not list at all. But then again, all strong art schools have both so if one does not, that may color your thinking a little.

Fine Arts Specialty Rankings: Photography

1. Yale University New Haven, CT
2. School of the Art Institute of Chicago Chicago, IL
3. Rhode Island School of Design Providence, RI
3. Rochester Institute of Technology Rochester, NY
5. University of New Mexico Albuquerque, NM
6. California Institute of the Arts Valencia, CA
7. San Francisco Art Institute San Francisco, CA
7. School of Visual Arts New York, NY
7. University of California--Los Angeles Los Angeles, CA
10. Arizona State University Tempe, AZ
10. California College of the Arts San Francisco, CA
10. Cranbrook Academy of Art Bloomfield Hills, MI

Note that duplicate numbers indicate a tie in scoring, but the total list is 10.

IMHO, the school does matter...but opinions vary on that. There may well be a good school in your area not on this list, but in the end, your portfolio is what is going to wow, or not wow, potential clients and employers.

Cannot comment on the school you mention in particular.

If you are looking for Online, nothing is going to beat the Academy of Art. I have tried several different schools and hated them all. The interaction with the instructors is fantastic. I post a photo and the instructor sends it back with sound clips and full markups. Yes, you will still have to take the basics but I have found them to be a great refresher. The instructors can tell that I have a great deal of knowledge (more than the basics) so they push me to take my photography to the next level. The advanced classes are also very good and require you to push yourself. You will get out what you put in!

The goal is to not only have a degree, but to also develop a well rounded portfolio. In this industry no one care where your degree is from. Clients only care about the portfolio!

PM me if you want to chat more. If you like I can send you a copy of some of the media used for the lessons to get an idea of the material.

What other online schools did you try and not like? The online aspect is appealing to me too. So many of the art schools are full time day.

Dang, that online university costs $2,010 for tution only for one class!

Well here is another thought and what I'm doing (not my kid), taking classes for an AA at a local community college. At the end of that, can transfer to something else for a BFA. You might want to think about where to do a BFA after and makes sure they would take CC credits. But our local community college has an excellent photography program and cost $300 per class. They also cater to night students and you take just one class at a time any time it fits your schedule...which is nice as you can take as long as you need to complete a degree.

May not work for your situation if you are AF, but anyway, another thought.

One of the many benefits of military service. I have been attending the Academy of Art for two years and have not paid one penny out of pocket!
